ResMed S9 SD Card Read/Write Errors

I submit this as a reference point:
1. I have never used the "Safely remove feature." I simply make sure the USB unit is not accessed and remove the unit. No problem related to possible premature withdrawalin years.

It is possible you have the write back cache disabled for that drive in Windows - this should be the default setting for any removable drive IMO.

Why would you want to remove the drive instead of just the media that it holds...

An added point that many SD Memory Card users may not realize is that SD in the name is an abbreviation of "Secure Digital." They are named Secure Digital Memory Cards because they have a hidden storage area where Digital Rights Management (DRM) data can be saved. It was mistakenly thought when standards for the cards were originally developed that the music industry would would put data in that hidden area to prevent music piracy. Despite that expectation, it has been used very little, if at all, and merely wastes storage space. Even so, by design, SD Memory Cards become totally unusable if the hidden area becomes corrupted and reformatting an SD Memory Card does not reformat the hidden area.

I think that may be my problem then, i followed all the steps for formatting and using my card and all i get is this when i insert my card into a reader

Yup, that's what we call in the industry as one screwed up card Bob!

At this point if a format doesn't resolve (and don't just to a Quick Format in Windows, untick the Quick Format box) then if it still comes back as corrupted, it means the FAT table is heavily corrupted and data isn't being written to the card correctly. I see a lot of SD cards like this, just with hieroglyphics as character names.

I would just make sure that it's not the card reader really screwing up the card, or a virus or antivirus software or something else, but I doubt it. When you get the new card, write protect it just in case.

It's nothing to do with the Secure Digital part of the card, it's just that the card has an onboard controller chip (just like a hard disk has) and it's not processing the data correctly so when it writes the data to the card it's corrupting it.

Dave: What do you think about using a micro SD card with an adapter to lessen the wear on the S9 card slot? You could leave the adapter in there all the time and just pull the micro card out. Same deal with the reader - you can then just replace the adapters if they get worn out?

You addressed that to Dave, rather than to me. However, a Micro SD Card with an adapter should work fine, except that they are very small and easy to misplace.

Yeah but as long as it only goes from the S9 to the computer I don't see myself losing it.

The SD card contacts will wear out long before the contact fingers in the slot, so you are addressing the wrong part of the (imagined) problem!

However, with even moderate care, an SD card used in a domestic situation should last several thousand insertions in a reader.

Well that's what I thought Bill but Dave seems to think otherwise going from his experience in Business. He finds the readers seem to wear out after 1000 insertions and hasSPECULATED the S9 may have a similar life. I'm not worried about the cards wearing out.

BTW Bill - what are your first impressions of the S9?

SD cards should last for several thousand inserts, but a lot of manufacturers will only stick by the lowest number, e.g. 1000.

MicroSD's would help reduce the wear and tear on the SD card writer but tend to be more flimsy and more prone to breaking themselves when you insert and take them out of the SD card adapter but would be less of a cost replacement.

First, take the card out, use a pencil eraser to rub (erase) on the foil strips to clean them, gentle, then re-insert the card and see if that doesn't help.
