Will I have to shave my beard?
Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
My beard has been here for 35 years. My wife has never seen me with out it. Kid would pass me on the street. It covers a lot of ugliness. Thank god nasal pillows work for me! Good Luck

Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
I have a beard that is similar to RLAUREN's. I get by fine using a ResMed Mirage Activa LT Nasal Mask. The air leaks that I have are due mostly to occasional leakage through my mouth. I am confident that leaks through my beard are negligible, because my machine reports that my leak rate is near zero through much of the night each night even at pressures over 12 cm H2O.
However, that hasn't been true with most other masks that I have tried. The Mirage Activa LT provides an exceptional good seal with my beard compared to other masks that I have tried.

I have a beard and use nasal pillows ,I do have a ffm(respironics full life) that I use when i get congested real bad and haven't had a problem with it ,it may take some experimenting ,but at least you should be able to keep your beard!

Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
I wear a very full and sometimes quite shaggy beard and have used the UMFF since day one without a bit of problems. My leakage is a little bit above what many seem to think is normal, but the machine is designed to make up for quite a bit of leakage. As long a the little bit of air escaping from the seal does not disturb you, there is no reason to shave...

Depends on the pressure, mask and how you sleep.

Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
Keep in mind, with a nasal mask, it isn't your beard that makes a potential leak, its your mustache! But please dont' go for the Menonite look...it isn't very lattering.
Actually I have a thick beard and mustache, myself....and rarely have leaks with my Activa LT. Just keep your cushion clean (I wash mine at the very least every other day, but usually daily.) When it gets oily, it leaks easier.

Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
I've had masks where the beard and even mustache were fine, not with my amara view... I can't keep a good seal if I don't shave at least every other day. it really depends on which masks work for you, and how tight you're willing to make them.

Instead of Sleep apnea it should be called "Sleep deprivation, starving of oxygen, being poisoned by high CO2 levels, damaging the body and brain while it's supposed to be healing so that you constantly get worse and can never get healthy Apnea"

Whether you keep your facial hair or not,
please be reminded to take care of your health,
especially the "guy" stuff.
The ladies will thank you for it.

Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
Mask seals are made of silicon and in your case will wear down sooner covering a beard over time. Consider your age and mask/seal replacement costs for the rest of your life then your stubble/beard/vanity is potentially going to cost you big time.
Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
I'm 38, have a very full beard, and use an AirFit F20. Works wonderfully for me, no leaks to speak of. I seem to have good luck with these things, though

Bearded here since the day after my wedding 36 years ago. I've been using Resmed N20 with just a slight trim under my nose.

Re: Will I have to shave my beard?
Had a beard for about 50 years here *smile*. And I try to sleep mostly on my side. Yes, nasal pillows work well if you can use them, Swift FX, AirFit P10, etc. I also liked the Sleepweaver Elan, a cloth nasal mask. I'm trying the AirTouch F20 at this point to see if I can find a full face mask that works for me. I tried the AirFit F10, no go there, could not control the leaks. The memory foam on the Airtouch F20 cushion has some promise so far. Haven't found the sweet spot between tightness and leaks for it yet...we'll see if I ever do *smile*.
I've been using the TAP PAP for over a year now since my nose needs to heal a bit and the TAP PAP has nasal pillows with no headgear, but I really don't like it, hence the AirTouch F20.
