mask is moving my teeth

Post by newname » Sun Feb 14, 2010 11:31 am

My mask is moving my front tooth downward. The mask presses on my mouth and I guess this is making the upper tooth move according to my dentist. He said it doesn't take much pressure to move a tooth. I'm alternating between activa lt and the new resmed gel that fits the same frame. I might have to go to nasal pillows, but I think they leak and don't give a good seal. which nasal pillows do you think give the best seal and are comfortable?

I use nasal pillows and have noticed that my front teeth have moved also. I now have a gap between my two front teeth. The next time I go to the dentist I am going to ask him if there is anything I can wear that will push them back together. Call me vain

I have slept with both a Respironics Comfort Gel Nasal Mask and the nasal pillows provided with the Swift LT for her. I think that the trick is to tighten your straps just enough to make a seal. On the Swift LT for her, this doesn't cause much pressure on my upper lip/teeth. That said, your dentist might recommend something for the teeth movement - he's the expert!

The Activa LT should not be doing this. The lower straps should be loose and the mask should be applying very little pressure to your upper lips (and tooth). That mask is made to be worn loose and you should be able to fit 2 fingers between the straps and your cheeks on both sides. It seals well anyway because of its "piston-like" cushion. How tight are your lower straps?

Same thing is happening to my bottom front teeth from the quattro. I don't worry about it too much since I think it's more important to be able to breathe and get good sleep than to have perfect teeth. I hope it doesn't cause other problems tho.

I just starting having this problem the past week or so. I am getting it even with the SleepWeaver!! I maybe have been wearing it a little tighter...but seriously...its not that tight.

So I figured that I was going to have to switch to a full face mask (insert massive whining), but if you are having it happen even with the Quattro, arghghg!!!

I am more than a little concerned about this and frankly, it hurts! I'm going to check with my dentist about the possibility of having a mouthpiece made, or a retainer, or see what he advises.

Has anybody else had this and what did they do to stop it, assuming that an over-tight mask was not the cause?

Masks can move our teeth? Good God.

The straps on my mask are loose and my teeth are still moving, but I do wonder if it's not caused from taping my mouth as the tape is snug.

I am concerned about the same problem. I use the Quattro, and frankly have to have the straps pretty tight to keep the seal. I've heard many people talk about looser straps so the mask can "float" on the face, but I guess the contours on my face require a pretty tight fit.

Well, the straps on mine are looser or tighter depending on how well it seals. The more the cushion wears out, the tighter I have to put the straps. I need to replace it about every month or I'd have to tighten it so much my neck hurts. It doesn't take much pressure at all to move teeth, though.

I've worn the original Swift nasal pillow for over 2 years, and soon after I started wearing it, I noticed that my bite was changing. My dentist said he'd heard that from another patients, and it didn't surprise him, as its almost like those (forget the name) headframes that some dental patients wear.
but........within the year, I developed TMJ disease and my jaw joint started locking. I'm now wearing a very expensive oral device to unload my jaw.
Anyhow.......I'm not sure which came first. I have the feeling my jaw joints have been deteriorating for a long time. My TMJ doc said she really didn't think my teeth moving was because of the cpap mask..........but I'm still thinking it was. Hard to know for sure. Seems like people with sleep apnea might have other problems (jaw/joints/grinding, etc.) that could contribute to teeth moving. Seems like the worst might be the pillows that push on your upper teeth or a mask that pushes on the lower teeth.
As Rosanne RosannaDana used to say "There's always somethin'!"

Greetings! There seems to be some question about (a) can a mask move teeth and (b) what can and/or should be done about this.

First of all, yes. With young, healthy teeth this should not be a problem if the mask is not too tight against the face / lips (upper or lower). However, as we age or as we develop problems with our gums, the gumline "recedes". Sometimes this can be a tendency that runs in the family. For example, my wife does a better job with oral hygiene. But she has more problems than I do with a receding gumline. In her family this tends to be linked to age more than oral health. Other families have a history of keeping strong teeth until the day they die.

Sometimes it can be due to poor hygiene. It can lead to Gingivitis. Left untreated it can lead to Periodontal Disease. And that you don't want to have happen (or need treatement to address it). I've been there, done that and do NOT want to repeat that!

At any rate, all of this can lead to distruction of the gum and bone in which our teeth are anchored. This can make it easier for pressure such as from a mask to move teeth over time.

Second, what would I do if confronted with this type of situation. Well, it's the same thing as I would do with a sleep problem. I would go see a specialist. Obviously this would be starting with my dentist. He might refer me to a specialist. And of course, whatever solution they proposed, I would insist that it work with my xPAP mask and therapy.

Hope that helps.

My jaw realigns every night, and my molars usually won't fully contact till mid day.
My mask just does that, and my Dentist didn't seem too concerned about it. I have to have my Activa LT a bit tighter because my mustache will cause a leak, and I don't fancy that hissing all night.

My bite also changed right away but my dentist did not seem worried about it. I don't notice it now. Sometimes my upper teeh will also hurt. I hope nothing happens to them, as my front teeth are not real. They are veneres thanks to thinking I could fly as a child and knocking my front teeth out
