Coworker died from OSA operation

Post by Jason S. » Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:15 am

I didn't know him personally, but he was only 47 years and did not want to use the CPAP. I don't know the severity of his OSA but he died of complications a day or so after the operation. Pretty scary.

According to Wiki these are the risks and it looks like there are plenty.

Risks
One of the risks is that by cutting the tissues, excess scar tissue can "tighten" the airway and make it even smaller than it was before UPPP. Some individuals who have undergone UPPP as a stand alone procedure have written on internet forums that they experienced a worsening of their breathing following UPPP[1][2][3]. Others have spoken of severe acid reflux.

After surgery, complications may include these:

Sleepiness and sleep apnea related to post-surgery medication
Swelling, infection and bleeding
A sore throat and/or difficulty swallowing
Drainage of secretions into the nose and a nasal quality to the voice. English language speech does not seem to be affected by this surgery.
Narrowing of the airway in the nose and throat (hence constricting breathing) snoring and even iatrogenically caused sleep apnea.
Patients who have had the uvula removed will become unable to correctly speak French or any other language that has a uvular 'r' phoneme.

Sorry to hear that.
I guess his OSA is now cured and he won't have to use CPAP.

UvuloPalatoPharyngoPlasty

The saddest part it that the notorious UPPP is not even a successful surgery when it works.
He should never have tried it.

When I had my UPPP, they did a tracheotomy (cut a hole in my neck) because I had a very narrow airway and any swelling from the surgery might have cut off my air supply. If that had occurred, I would not be writing this.

BTW - the surgery was the worst thing that I have ever gone through and did virtually no good.

That's very sad. It seems like so many people want a different answer than strapping on a mask every night, even if that answer is surgery.

To me, my mask is like a welcome friend who will help me get a good night's rest.

I disagree.

The saddest thing is that those idiot doctors are going to keep doing those surgeries despite that it is a useless procedure for OSA.

I feel the same about apea as I do about Lasik corrective eye surgery.

As long as I can wear glasses to correct my vision I will... Lasik is permament along with the permanent side effects. Same with surgery for whatever... if I can avoid it I will. I will just have to learn to live with the xPAP machine and eyeglasses. <--- the keyword there is LIVE.
