Encore Analyzer Variable Breathing Poll

Post by -SWS » Mon Nov 24, 2008 11:57 pm

Variable Breathing, or VB, is a Respironics machine statistic that our message board knows very little about. Does unusually high or low VB impact sleep? Is there a normal or acceptable VB range? Does a sudden change in VB trend reflect a change in health? So many questions and so few answers.

Perhaps we can at least take a rough "curiosity peek" to see what kind of variable breathing rates people are experiencing. This might also be a good thread to mention anything at all of relevant interest---such as VB spikes, VB lows, how VB trends impact your sleep, etc.

The above poll unfortunately only applies to Respironics data that is returned by Encore Analyzer----a program written by James Skinner. I would encourage anyone here to offer thoughts about variable breathing and sleep.

Thanks in advance!

EPA only works on Encore Pro and not even on viewer - though you might want ot make that clearer in you poll.

This is one of those "$64 questions" I've been trying to figure out since the beginning of my therapy. I've also been using Derek's "MyEncore" software since the beginning and it gives an average for VBF. My average typically runs just below "30". However, my range has been from about 20 to the high 40's (those are very rare) with the typical night being somewhere between 25 and 35. And, remember......my pressure is fixed at 12.

I've tried to correlate it with AHI......can't do it. I had an AHI of 0.0 last night and my VBF was right at 30.....I had a 0.1 the night before and my VBF was about 20......and I've had good and bad nights (in terms of sleep quality and AHI) with similar and different VBF numbers.

I've wondered if it has something to do with the REMstar Auto's algorithm, but then it's also being logged in the data-capable CPAP machines.

I remember back when we had these similar conversations with Derek (when he brought out MyEncore). He said it was in the database so he put it into his program. I wish someone from Respironics would fess up to what it was intended to represent or potentially be used for.

Maybe another example that too much information can mess with your mind.

When I get home I'll check to see if I can see any difference in my numbers since I have been off of the Lexapro.

When I comes to Variable Breathing, I refer to the "States of All Matter".

Matter
Anti-Matter
Don't Matter

I think Variable Breathing is in the Don't Matter State, because you can't change it or control it. SO, Don't Matter, for sure! Jim

I found three threads were it was discussed with Derek. The "because it's there" is in the second thread, I believe.

For newcomers who have never seen Variable Breathing charts, here are two that have been recently posted on this message board:

This one is Browser's. His VB highs sure seem to spike much higher than what most people report.

Here's a VB chart that OutaSync recently posted.

Jim I would agree under most circumstances - but with Bev, erratic breathing due to medication or hereditary or some other environmental factor in her childhood, causes her to sent the VB controller into fits.

So for some of us VB matters
