Hi Guys,

Recently done sleep study and result came back pretty bad. AHI 85.3/hr !!! Thus decided to start using CPAP machine. Went to local dealer and it seems CPAP machine is quite pricy in Australia. It starts from 1500 to 2500. He told me that I can try different CPAP machine for next two months for 200 AUD. I came back with Respironics System One 60 and NASAL mask. I could see tremendous improvement on my quality sleep. Though my mouth open during sleep thus it become very dry. My dealer advised me to try with different mask which will cover mouth too.

Now I am confused which CPAP machine I should go for. Is it safe to buy second hand CPAP machine? Is Resmond Autoset S9 better than Respironics? What is the difference between portable travel CPAP machine vs ordinary one? Can portable CPAP machine be use for daily use?

Any advise will be highly appreciated.

Sandy

This is my first post. My post-surgery nurse noticed my abnormal sleep pattern after coming off of anesthesia from carpal tunnel surgery. That was in June of 2015. I finally got my CPAP machine last week, after 2 sleep studies, 2 more surgeries, and lots of delay. I am happy to find this board, also hopeful to start receiving the benefits of CPAP therapy. I have loads of other health issues, and am hopeful this may resolve some of them.

Thans!

Noob here.

I've had my cpap machine about 3 weeks & just recently started having night terrors. I was told I would "start having vivid dreams" but nothing prepared me for these things. After adjusting well to my machine & wee nasal pillows, I find myself yanking the entire contraption off my head during these nightmares. The anxiety created by just getting ready for bed & donning the mask is freaking me out.

I've taken warm baths, used aromatherapy, visualizations, over the counter sleep aids, & finally a very mild anti-anxiety medication. Nothing is helping. I'm afraid to go to sleep.

Here's my equipment info, if that's helpful:
ResMed AirSense10 Autoset
AirFit P10 Nasal Pillow System for Her.

Any suggestions?

Hi Jules, been a couple years from being discouraged using my previous machine. Only gave it a couple of nights from my few first posts I have. I hated it! But, now on a new machine today and seems to be better for me. Plus, the new mask is snug and comfortable. I'm still kind of getting the hang of what everything is since is new.

A good place for a cpap newbie to start is forums like this one and the sleep apnea associations website and also your sleep specialist (Doctor) and maybe your DME.

Right now I feel the only place I can start with my New CPAP machine is on Ebay and see if I can't sell the THING

People who know me say they appreciate me as a nice calm fellow, nice to be around
I have never been one who is susceptible to temper tantrums or Irrational Rage - at least - NOT until now !

I have recently had a heart valve job and I presently suffer from Atrial Fibrillation and so have been prescribed Apixaban, a blood thinner
I have recently been enduring Chronic Insomnia that seemed to be quickly worsening, so the Doctor recommended a sleep study
The diagnosis was a "Severe Sleep Apnea" Ox level drops to 78%, and so a CPAP machine was prescribed

I can't stand it ! - The damded thing sends me into a RAGE ! - I can hardly refrain from jumping up and down on the OFFENCE
I can feel the adrenalin surge, Blood Pressure and Heart Rate go through the roof ! - I'll end up in an ambulance to get
Zapped by the Paddles again, in order to DeFib me at this rate!

I can't sleep Now ! - I get about two hours a night - How in HELL can I be expected to sleep with an INVASIVE Appliance
strapped to my head, that is constantly Blowing AIR up my nose ! - NO WAY on God's Blue Marble !!! -
How can anybody adapt to this THING! - I feel myself incapable. It's like asking me to climb a mountain with roller skates on !

It seems so bloody Stupid to me - So counter intuitive !!! -
"Here clamp this thing on, let it blow air up your nose - pleasant dreams !" HA HA HA

I sleep on my side and move around a lot - It blows air all over my face - I can't endure it let alone sleep with it !
I have an appointment with the Sleep Specialist - I expect he will recommend a different mask - I am skeptical

I KNOW I need to control this Apnea - I can't see how it is possible with THAT #@*!%^& THING - getting desperate

If you really want help, please start a new post below explaining exactly what your problems are. Now that you have registered, fill your equipment in the control panel. Giving up will only add to your health problems. E-bay will not allow sales of medical equipment. If your insurance paid for your machine, they expect you to use it or they may want it back.

Sorry if I Faux-Pas
But I thought the place to start would be the thread Titled:
"Where A CPAP Newbie Should Start" it seemed obvious to me at the time

I finally found the Control Panel and my Profile & entered what I could
Please bear with me, I am suffering some confusion due to severe Fatigue as a result of Chronic Insomnia

During my sleep study I was allowed a Sleeping Pill and still only managed to get 1 1/2 - 2 hrs sleep
That seemed to give them enough Data to prescribe this CPAP Machine

I can't see that the machine issued me is listed on the Profile entry page

"ResMed AirSense 10 Autoset" is titled on the Instruction Manual
The Mask issued me has "Philips Respironics" printed on the back

The Humidifier is part of the machine
Nowhere can I see what Software is installed

I have no ICQ , AOL etc etc
I have nothing suitable as an Avatar at the moment

I will do as you ask & post down below

start LEARNING not start BITCHING.

for other newbies.... this poster turned out to just be a troll, and thankfully left after a brief pollution of the forum.

Dear Newbie - I've had two doctors tell me that I have one of the worst case of sleep apnea that they've ever seen! Newbie - be patient. I've been on a CPAP for almost a year, and though the progress has been slow,it has definitely improved my quality of life. For the first three months I cussed the mask out every night! Any mask on your face is not natural - and' yes 'it's uncomfortable... But you can get used to it - especially if you realize that it will promote your overall health and well-being. (in fact I think CPAP saved my marriage).

So,make "friends" with the CPAP and the stupid face mask... I finally made peace with it - knowing that my health - and my mood would improve. And they have. Is it weird? Yes. Is it uncomfortable? Yes. Is it worth it? OH YES!!!

The discomfort of using the CPAP and the stupid mask is absolutely worth it.
Stick with it, and you will see results. Also, if you don't have a doctor that specializes in sleep disorders - please find one. Good luck to you, newbie.

Hello Newbie - Yeah, it is uncomfortable, but you/ll get used to it. • Face itching? Heard that - but, again, you'll get used to it ... just learn to ignore it. (easy to say, hard to do). • I tried the nasal mask, which was nice and way more comfortable. But I'm using 18 out of 20 pressure on my ResMed CPAP,which is way too much pressure for the little nasal mask. (darn it). • I allow myself one time a night to take the face mask off, scratch my nose, eyes, face, get a drink of water, etc. • Using a humidifier on the CPAP helps with itching and dry mouth - I have mine cranked up to 70% now - helps. • The best advice I can give is just stay with it - do not give up on it. It is an advocate for your health. I had a long hard first three months, but I have come to terms with it. CPAP is truly a life-saver. Make it your friend.

Hi,
I'm new to cpap, Nov. 2016. Still learning what its all about and what questions to ask. I fly rc gliders and helicopters and belong to several rc forums. There are many wonderful people out there who put in the extra time and effort to help noobs get started in the hobby. I have found this site to be more of the same! Thanks to all of the forum members who have contributed their experiences to make this process less confusing! I had a bunch of questions just prior to becoming a member, now not so much. Thanks for the wealth of information that you have all contributed. `

Noobie here - Just got my machine yesterday, so I have a lot of adjustments to make in my life. Got diagnosed about a month ago (home study), then got sent in for a overnight study a week later where they put the machine on me to determine the setting. To be honest ever since the diagnosis I have been anxiously awaiting the machine and the HOPE that I will feel rested when I wake up - I know it will take some time, but I am so ready for it.

I went with a full-face mask as it felt the most comfortable, but it was difficult sleeping with it and my machine was unhappy with the amount of air leakage.

I intend on reading thru all the good material out here, but I do have one question. Do others with full face mask now sleep on their backs to prevent it from moving? I have been a side sleeper for a long time but kept running into the pillow

Thanks again for having this forum
