How to set your hose on fire with a reptile cord

Ok well now that I've stopped laughing, this is serious. I figured that if some humidity was good, more maybe? Anyway I got a 9 meter reptile cord since I belong to the Toolman Tim school of thought and wrapped it around my hose.

Of course safety is uppermost in my mind so I bought a thermostat. I plugged it all in and selected a medium temperature. Is that right I thought? I better google it.

So googling turned into searches for things like lung temperature and pulmonary edema as they often do. Then I smelled something odd.

My hose is melted. Not just a bit, Its GONE. Is some sections nothing remains except some gray melted cheese looking stuff.

So yeah, guess who forgot to attach the thermo sensor for the thermostat?

Still, what happens to people who just plug in the wire without a thermostat? The thermostat cost a 100 bux, people get these for $30 so are they thermostat models?...Are these things dangerous? maybe I didn't need an 80 watter....

Anyhow, the place I rent this from already hates me because I touched the clinical menu. What on earth will they think when I tell them I melted the thing like a toasted cheese sandwich?

Maybe 80 watts is a bit much... Perhaps you should stick with the "demister out of my fairmont ghia" viewtopic.php?p=272855&sid=c750cf77962d ... b9687ceba3

Currently I'm using the 15w cable, and I reduced the power with a Repti Rheostat (~15$US). I have it on the lowest setting for now, but I'll probably turn it up during the winter. I also have found that some basic hose management not only helps me to sleep better, but it also prevents the hose from laying under a pillow where heat can build up and cause problems.

1. Resmed hoses smell really bad when they melt.
2. Don't wind the coils of the heat cord too closely.
3. You maybe don't need a wrap on top as well if you have several meters and 80 watts....
4. Resmed hoses melt at relatively low temperatures actually. Don't they know what I'm like? Sheesh!

5. Plug in the sensor...

Well, not all of us Aussies are so forgetful I guess.

I was going to get one of those heated hoses but figured I could probably make one with more horsepower...Well actually I just didn't want to wait for an ordered one.

I got the enormous long cable because I want to get a much longer hose later (its a male thing) Anyway, near the end of the hose I figured I would just coil it all side by side so it was more like a solid heating tube than a cable. I didnt expect it to heat up so quickly, DOH!

Anyway, I'm kinda glad I saw how easy it is to smoke a cpap pipe. I'm sure its not dangerous used the way other people do, and I really had just wrapped it up and turned it on to figure out how much heat it puts out etc. I just got distracted reading up on the temperature required for healthy lungs.

But it doesn't hurt to know the limits. I could still handle the cable itself quite easily when it melted the hose and the cable is not damaged at all. I might melt the rest of the hose at controlled temps so I know how much they will take.

Have a look at the photos in that link and you can see the cord, its just a piece of cable with a plug on the end. The entire cord heats up. They are used in reptile cages etc.

I have been complaining about Wilson syndrome elsewhere on the board, if that answers your second question.

I checked out what a reptile cord is.....and this is what an Aussie site said:

...The list of uses for this heating cord is endless...(1 point for you!)

....you can even use it in your outside pits or enclosure because it is WATERPROOF.....; you'll never get electrocuted if your xpap humidifier leaks!) so add another 2 points

...It has even been sold to a large boarding kennel to keep the woofers warm.. ( are you a woofer? if not you just lost all your points!)

the native rescue groups also love these heating cords as it helps keep a larger percentage of there rescued animals alive and we think that's great!( they never said "roasted!" ... !

... Wired to Australian Standards. ( and your standards are ???)

Just too funny. I read it out loud to my husband and had him rolling around laughing. Yes, there is protocal for making one of these hoses. Not any 80watts either... so funny

Keep us posted on how much they charge you for another hose! Probably more than you paid in parts to "save some money and time".

Still gotta laugh... definetly a man thing for sure!!!

Unfortunately, it is. Those types of heating systems for reptiles are notorious for severely burning the animals. Best to use a heating lamp outside the cage.

(I know, I burned my snake and had to do first aid for weeks - another sign of my oddness - just don't ask about the week I had 50 reptiles living in my home)
