What symptoms went away with your cpap use?

Post by Country4ever » Thu Jul 24, 2008 7:21 pm

Just curious what symptoms you all had disappear once you used your cpap effectively.

My blood pressure went down from 170/90 to 135/ 60. I also over the period of a year lost 30 lbs. I am now at 225. I was retaining water and taking meds for that. That is no longer a problem. The swelling in my ankles has gone down a bunch. I feel much better even though I still have bouts with insomnia. Guess thats a getting old (75) thing. APAP is good. jim

- Terrible daily headaches when away
- Irratability disappeared
- Daytime fatigue went away
- Night sweating stopped
- thinking became clear again
- Ability to get erections returned (that was a relief)
- Remembered things better
- Pounding/racing heart in the night stoppped
- The return of dreams (that was wonderful)

Ditto to most of above

Post by Captain_Midnight » Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:03 pm

I concur with soooo much of the above.

My b.p. is down to 108/58 (it was in the stratosphere)

My resting heart rate is below 50 (and is not bradycardia in my case)

My physical conditioning is better (ran my first half marathon a little over a year after starting xPAP.)

Cognition improved substantially. I can think more deeply, read faster with better retention, and recall with more facility. ( Before OSA dx, I had a pretty good idea what a dog saw when it looks at a TV when I tried to follow technical conversations.)

Handwriting and typing speed improved.

Speaking ability improved. (My better/2 would often complain that I would have long hesitations and pauses in my speech. No longer.

I feel more at ease in social situations. Where I was previously more reserved, I now have to guard against talking too much.

As above, I no longer wake up 6 or more times per night so sweaty that I would need to turn my pillow over, and my pulse racing. (As a sidebar, like many undiagnosed apneics, I thought I slept well because I fell asleep easily.)

My vision improved (which is actually unfortunate, because I had laser surgery 10 yrs ago. Now I'm over corrected.)

I could go on, but I'm talking too much again...

Good topic.

Regards all - -

Symptoms that improved with cpap

Post by kteague » Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:56 pm

Only occasionally feel like dead woman walking (even then cpap not to blame)

No more dreams of suffocating and choking or otherwise dying

No more waking coughing and feeling "strangled" with heart racing

Constant desire for food much improved

Improved ability to finish a story without jumping to another because I'd forgotten what I was saying

Unplanned naps reduced to 2-6 most days

Recently able to fairly regularly attend a water exercise class

Edema less in mornings after nights when sleep is best

Talking to doc about BP. Last couple times it was taken they've asked me if it always runs a little low. (Maybe time to reduce the medicine?)

Instantly -- snoring, waking with a headache, acid reflux

Over time -- daytime sleepiness, desire for naps, waking in a mental fog that took an hour or more to clear

My long-term memory was/is always good, but my short term memory was deteriorating. I put it down to aging, but it has markedly improved since cpap. I see increased energy levels, too.

Thanks everyone.

I've always been a person who just has to understand why something is happening.
That has been a challenge, since having fibromyalgia and going through menopause......which have crazy symptons by themselves.
My leak rate has been up and I've developed something like sympathetic overdrive.........heartrate always up, feeling shakey, sweaty, weak, and close to a panic attack all the time.
The major tests have been run, and they're normal.
Could all these symptoms be just from a couple weeks of higher leak rates, or is it something else that's causing the higher leak and AHI rates? That's my dilemma.
Since I haven't been able to stop the leaks consistently, and get good enough sleep to see if that fixes my symptoms, I've had to go back on a beta blocker to slow my heart down.
Do any of you get funky symptoms like that during the day? .........fast heart rate, sweating, panic? Maybe its all just one big panic attack, and the physical symptoms come from that.
Anyone get panic attacks from their sleep apnea? I don't mean just at night, but 24/7?
I do have trouble finding docs who think outside the box, so I'm trying to figure this out myself. Its a challenge.

Let’s see …

BP from 180/105 to 115/65 (still taking BP meds but I’m on the smallest dosage available and I have to cut that dosage in half with a pill splitter ... hoping to get off BP meds completely when I visit w/ doc next month).

Total cholesterol from over 270 down to 155 and a reversal of my HDL/LDL ratio from very bad to very good (was taken off statins 6 months after starting CPAP).

Went from waking 4 or 5 times a night to go to bathroom to zero bathroom visits.

No more severe migraines or muscle and joint aches (I can relate to the daily apnea hangover comment).

Lost craving for high-carb diet and have also lost about 60 lbs.

No more ED issues and I wake up every morning like I used to in my late teens and early twenties (w/ morning wood ).

No more nighttime drooling or drool stained pillow cases.

Began dreaming every night like I used to when I was young.

Oh yes, I no longer feel tired/exhausted/sleepy 24/7 … and instead I now have lots of energy to do lots of things (I feel about 10 to 15 years younger).

President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

Losing weight (almost 20 pounds)

Off depression meds.

One bathroom visit per night (down from 4 visits)

Clear head.

Energy to exercise.

Able to do my work well.

Kevin

There was a thread from back in 2007 i think, (probably mroe than one) about the weirdest syptoms that went away with cpap use, ones not normally linked to the therapy.

I searched for over half an hour... in vain.

i remember one person said their singing voice improved. I thought it was gasp or organplayer...???

Anyone know where that thread is???

This is a great thread.
I knew when I started this, it wasn't going to be an overnight happening.
It was not.
But, all of these testimonies prove that it is happening.

I'm having similar changes, too.
Latest, 3 nights w/no bathroom visits.

These posts remind me of conversations when a bunch of cyclists get together.
The topics usually revolve around 3 things:
The ride of the day.
How their bike is working.
How their body is working.
You can have some very personal conversations, among complete
strangers, that seem perfectly in place.
