I hate to generalize, but it always seems that the people who rant the loudest about how horrible other countries are have never been anywhere else. or they have one anecdotal story or something like that.

I hate to generalize, but it always seems that the people who rant the loudest about how horrible other countries are have never been anywhere else. or they have one anecdotal story or something like that.

Or they have some stories that someone in a back room somewhere made up to run on FOX "News". Most of the time these stories cannot be backed up for one reason or another, but once they're out there those that want to believe them will believe them. Doesn't matter if these apocryphal stories are later proved incorrect or baseless, they'll live forever on the internet and on FOX "News".

The health insurance companies are another special interest group that work very hard to convince people that we in the US have the best medical care on earth. To help their profits, they own enough people in congress and the senate to get laws written for their benefit, or get written into health care insurance reform. Which is one reason why we're very unlikely to ever have health care or health care insurance that's rational, they need maximize their profits for their stockholders. The public good just doesn't matter.

I just wonder what profession you are engaged in? How did you avoid being a doctor, a medical researcher, a technician, a lab worker, a nurse? How did you avoid becoming one of these nasty people who are only interested in money and don't give a damn about their fellow man?

People seem surprised sometimes that you can get free or near free care in some countries without hassles. Or that healthcare in places like Middle East and North Africa can be actually quite good.

If I am taken to hospital here in Australia nobody asks me if I have health cover before I am admitted or even before the paramedics put me in the ambulance. The impression I get is that that this is not true in the US.

I was taken by the ambos to the local hospital just over a year ago with symptoms that looked like a silent heart attack. The treatment and it's follow up has been exemplary and hasn't cost me a cent (apart from parking charges at the hospital for follow up visits). Wonderful care in my opinion.

Now I do pay for this via my taxes but am happy to do so knowing it's there for me and my family.

How does this system compare with the US. If I was on the 'bones of my arse' (Aussie for broke) would I get this free care?

There is no such thing as "free care". Not even in Australia.

I realise that nothing in Australia is absolutely free as I pay via Medicare from my salary every fortnight. The free part I am talking about is the treatment I get when I get to the hospital/doctor/physio (on workcover)/radiologist/etc. It's pretty impressive. I get the impression that the UK system is even better.

The only one out of 6 cardiologists that I found to be competent is on the verge of bankruptcy and is in negotiations to sell his business to one of the 2 local hospital monopolies where I live. My PCP of over 20 years has told me he is calling it quits and decided to retire at the end of this year. My PCP told me that the healthcare system is collapsing and he cannot afford to stay open for business anymore because it is now cutting into his own retirement savings. He let go of his 2 nurses about 5 years ago and split the previous nursing duties between himself and his wife (also his receptionist and insurance billing specialist). He had tried to convert his business into a concierge business model due to Medicare/Medicaid payment schedule but said it has not worked out because people cannot afford both the Obamacare tax and the $100/month minimum concierge fee he needed to stay in business. He said he would rather just retire and do part-time volunteer work at the VA.

Anyway, this is all just a small piece of the overall global collapse we are witnessing (and most witnessing blindly at that). But hey, we are at the center of the empire and the other people suffering are still off in some far away place that only our tax dollars can reach. Have a great day!

Speaking of my one time UK Healthcare experience, I was surprised when after my examination the Dr. went into another room and came out with a bottle of pills and handed them to me. I commented to him, "No prescription, No pharmacies?", his reply, "Only for complex meds, that need compounding". Is this a cost saving measure? I offered to pay, but the MD laughed and said, "Here we believe healthcare is a human right".
