We are being mined!

Look at all the last posts and the email addresses, we are being mined by spammers, Johnnie, I hope you have the software to defend the site!

I think it is now time to stop unregistered "guests" from posting into the forum(s).

Have you ever looked at the list of "registered" members? There's a ton of them from Russia and other scary places. Read my other post (a ways down the page).....all they'd have to do is block any guest posting with the "@" sign in it.

I'm seeing posts from someone who died last year.

Looks like every post for five or six pages has been spammed at least once. Can Johnny automatically remove all of these? All the old, old posts are mixed in with the new ones!

think it is from a BOT program, think it is called XRumor, it can blast these phpBB freebie forum sites with all kinds of spam messages. When you look at it, it is just another form of a denial of attack. On the site below they boast how they can hack into the inner workings of phpBB:

http://www.botmaster.net/more1/

I have no idea why they let companies like that sell software to allow that. I'm sure this site is on their list of test sites included in the trial download. When you have to accept Western Union as payment, looks like you are attracting some pretty shady clientele to begin with.

I hang out on another forum website, they don't use this freebie phpBB forum software, I've never seen it have a single spam message in all the years I've been on it and from what I can tell it gets a lot more traffic than this one.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

So Cpaptalk.com has been a victim of the cyberwar spamcast from Russia after they finished off Estonia.

I know we get a little politicized.

Multi-spam messages

Post by Bella » Thu May 17, 2007 12:44 pm

I reported one thread that had 3 postings in a row from the spambot!

Interesting information, snoredog. I checked a few other forums that I frequent, expecting to see something and--nothing. No spam anywhere and none that I remember from the past, either.

Looks like ours have all be removed now.

Pam

I've reported many spam messages, though none in the last few days.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the point of the spam messages? All they have is nonsense?

It makes no sense to me to post messages like that - what purpose does it serve other than annoying us?

I believe that was the intention of this spam attack.

I think (from memory when I did some IpSec related work) that the intention is to get through the defenses of the Spam killer engines (such as SpamAssassin http://spamassassin.apache.org/ ). SpamAssassin is part of the Apache project & was one of the widest used Spam killing engines.
cpaptalk will most likely have a spam killer as part of their web set-up.

By including a random set of otherwise normal words, the email gets past the test that looks for known spam words/topics - then if they can get accepted by the likes of SpamAssassin, the email bot follows with their payload.

Please forgive my denseness, but I just don't get this...

What's the "payload" and what's the reward?

The 1st message is to establish the url as a valid source of input. When SpamAssassin flags that url as ok the next message has the payload or spam data (buy viagra - visit madam lash's web site - visit honey doll's web cam site - what ever )

The rewards for people who can blast bast Spam killers is selling their services.
