Ot: names

Post by babydinosnoreless » Mon Mar 11, 2019 5:17 pm

I am going to ask if I can change my login name. Mine is boring. Thinking on it.... the one that's kind of sticking in my mind is TheMaskedDreamer but its kinda long.

Suggestions.... Comments ..... what do you all think?

Accounts to put on the foe list: dataq1, clownbell, gearchange, lynninnj, mper!?, DreamDiver, Geer1, almostadoctor, sleepgeek, ajack, stom, mogy, D.H., They often post misleading, timewasting stuff.

I certainly do.

I remember the Internet, before it was the Internet, at least before it was commercialized and graphical.

We used to dial in with out 300/1200 BAUD modems, connect to a UNIX host. Instead of using the web and a browser we used gopher and then lynx. Instead of forums we used usenet (NNTP protocol), instead of google, search was Archie and Veronica servers. The only thing that really survived from that era was IRC, Internet Relay Chat.

Prior to that, I (illegally) used a dialup service called DataPac, the Canadian equivalent of Tymenet. This was a commercial network service that was used for B2B data services, including education and Interac. Security back then was non-existent and many sites relied on their DataPac address being unknown for protection. Sites often had default or easily guessable credentials.

Using DataPac and its connection to other networks we were running the globe connecting to computers all over the world. Our motivation was to collect and trade host credentials and get access to "mainframes" and "minis" so we could learn "real" computer systems. Real computer systems being HP3000s, Vaxes and UNIX hosts.

A friend of ours had a bird that would perfectly mimic those dial up handshake tones. I remember going from 1200 to 2400 baud and then higher. It was so screaming fast we could upload and download packets so much faster and save on ld phone bills of course we didn't care how much we were paying for those modems. probably a lot more than the phone bills.

Usenet's still around, and shuffling terabytes of data.

Btw, all this computer history reminds me of Eudora... One of my early ISP's... :)
I may be older than dirt, but at least i remember that Eudora was an email client, not an ISP. :P

hehe not only remember Fred & Wilma post Viet Nam and pre kids but actually colored thousands of acetate cells of them and the town of Bedrock for Hanna Barbera productions in Van Nuys. Pure part-time college min wage sweat shop in those days for the artistically inept that could mostly color within the lines. Tom & Jerry cells before that and Jetsons for a short while after then finished my BS and left lala land forever...

Oh and almost forgot; Pebbles and Friday night ;-)
