I think that many asthma diagnoses, especially ones dating back many years, are bad diagnoses for SDB.

How do you figure that? Do you really think people who were diagnosed with asthma only have problems at night?

I am very aware that asthma and sleep apnea are two different problems. Yes, they both affect breathing. And in my case, have the same basic cause (narrow airway configuration). But the actual breathing problems are different, and the treatments are different. When allergies set off my asthma attacks, it has nothing to do with the way I sleep.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

bipap is can be more suitable sometimes, but it doesn't substitute from proper medical care. It is worth googling.

I don't have a link. All I know is that I went to an asthma doctor who said that - despite a previous asthma diagnosis - I do not have asthma and never had it! I just had a chronically sore airway due to severe Sleep Apnea! Prior to that, I'd just ignored my previous diagnosis for about fifteen years (due to the total absence of symptoms since starting CPAP).

I have cough variant asthma. It sounds like I’m “coughing up a lung” as my kids always remind me. During a flare up I’m miserable all day waiting for the slightest thing to set off a coughing attack, using my rescue inhaler, suffering the jitters, etc.

But at night, heaven. I strap on the mask and the coughing stops. I sleep all night (I remember before CPAP when an asthma exacerbation would keep me awake for days trying to rest in a recliner between coughing jags). Now I sleep well and I sometimes come home from work midday just to nap with CPAP to get a break from coughing (perk of self-employment).

Fortunately, another perk of CPAP is that I rarely get sick or have these asthma flare ups any more (diet changes help that, too).
