Not Using Distilled Water?

Post by Biguugly » Mon Jan 22, 2018 3:21 pm

Anyone out there NOT using distilled water? Not just a day or two, but for a long time. I had my water tested at my expense, and lab said It was a waste of money to distill it. Have own still, but getting annoying. Thanks Guys........and Gals.

Ask your local water utility how hard your water is.
If it is soft, maybe not an issue.
At 13 grains here, I would have to de-lime my tank every week.
Eventually, the bullfrog will have to de-lime the distiller.
Pick your poison.

Didn't trust local county water folks; had it tested at independent lab; said it was a waste of time according to what they analyzed. Thanks.

Distilled water at Kroger is 75¢ gal. A gal last me about 3 weeks. That won't break the bank.

No Kroger's here, but it's 88¢ at Walmart. One gallon lasts me about 6 weeks.
On occasion, I have used some (Brita) filtered water. No problems.

The reason for using distilled water in the humidifier tank is to avoid a build up of minerals. If you use regular water and have no build up, you are good to go.

I have well water and a water softener. I never use distilled water. I dump and rinse every morning and let air dry.
To avoid mineral deposits, fill-up enough water so that it doesn't dry out when in use. This helps to keep the minerals in solution.

I never use distilled water anymore. I do usually use a dishwasher safe reservoir but that doesn’t really make any difference. We have well water that doesn’t seem to build up residue. If I feel stuff building up I just soak the reservoir with white vinegar and that quickly dissolves anything. I went 3 months this last time before I felt a slight need to do that. It certainly makes traveling easier - we just returned from a 2 month trip and my reservoir was still fine. Don’t forget distilled doesn’t have anything to do with bacteria free, only mineral free.

Agreed. I have used my tap water several nights in a row (because for some reason our Wal-Mart seems to have droughts -haha- of distilled water for a week or more) with no issue other than having to soak with vinegar after. My well water is inordinately high in mineral content so it's only a fallback for me, but if your water doesn't leave deposits (or you don't mind scrubbing them off periodically) it should be fine.

Not using distilled water is fine, the company will gladly sell you new tanks, For Resmed, it may even slow down leaks in the HH tank.

Meanwhile the rest of us that can read, will do as the manual suggests and buy that expensive $0.80 a gallon miracle distilled water.

Unless you don't own a apple tree, vinegar costs more than distilled water, then if your time is worth something add that in too. I came up with a better solution, I stopped using a HH, 2 years ago, I poured my costly stash of water in the stool. Jim

Not everyone has hard water issues.
I have not used distilled water in nearly 8 years of use and I have never cleaned the tank with vinegar. There is no build-up. My water has been softened and I don't let the remaining minerals adhere.

We have hard water here, but as a polliwog, I lived next to an artesian well.
It was right next to the house, and the well-head was about 4 feet above the ground-
Just enough to fill the sink, but not enough to take a shower.
It was so incredibly soft and delicious--I miss it.

Soft water is one of those things that feel so wrong when you are used to hard water. Most think that soft water doesn't remove the soap which is incorrect. Once you get used to it, you can't go back. Just like air conditioning.

Here it's hard as nails, but no iron deposits. I boiled some eggs the other day, when they were done, they were one inch bigger around, I broke my best hammer taking the shell off.I should have boiled them in vinegar.

If it wasn't for the pipes liming up, the water would probably leak out of the pipes before they got to the faucets. Jim
