Actually, it's probably "don't shake hands with anybody, and use hand sanitizer when touching door knobs and other surfaces that other people are touching (shopping carts, etc)" and whatever you do, for heavens sake, don't touch anything and then rub your nose or eyes.

Thanks everyone for the help. I have decided to keep the money and treat myself for mu upcoming birthday. I will just be more vigilant when I clean it to be sure it is very clean and I did not miss a spot.

If your immune system isn't faulty, it makes little difference, they are likely your germs, and your body deals with them daily. It's the germs you meet in public that are likely the ones that will cause you trouble, because your body hasn't built a defense for them yet. Jim

But carrying/using hand sanitizer when you go out can't hurt.

The way the flu season is going this year, hand sanitizer, a box of gloves, and masks...

Gloves and masks maybe. According to the news stations hand sanitizer is a waste of money and does nothing to prevent getting a cold or the flu.

I wonder why they use it in hospitals, for everybody going between patient rooms then...

Flu is most commonly spread hand to hand... so, "shrugs"

But, by all means, don't use any, since it's a waste of money.

Over-use of a good thing has been shown to be a bad thing;
but the good thing remains good--in its proper place.
Antibiotics give rise to antibiotic resistant strains.
Individuals with compromised immunity have a better chance at survival.
And TGTFTH for nothing.

I thought you didn't read my posts.

Not sure about the hospitals in your area... but in mine they use GLOVES, which they change from patient to patient... so, "shrugs".

Oh, sometimes I look past the troll curtain to see what kind of useless sludge oozed out from under the bridge.

Every room in the last hospital I was in had hand sanitizer, and three boxes of gloves near the door, so they could perform proper hand sensitization AND put on fresh gloves. It's a two step process, properly carried out.

Actually it is spread by droplets that are airborne more than by infected hands.
From the CDC website,.....

"People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose."
