Tongue ring as a cure?

Post by FlyingMoose » Wed Jan 10, 2018 1:20 am

I'm always thinking of crazy ideas, and I'm not suggesting anyone try this...

I was wondering about having a tongue piercing, and inserting a bar long enough to keep your tongue sticking out.

If a bar would be too much pressure on one area, then maybe a port which you would insert a stick through during the night.

If I stick my tongue out far enough, it's almost impossible for me to close my throat up even if I want to.

Maybe even some other way to keep the tongue out, although you want to be careful not to cut off the circulation. I was thinking of how the dentist wraps gauze around it and holds it out of the way while working, I wonder if some mechanical solution to do the same thing would work. Or a custom size/shape cup that would use suction.

Your tongue would get very dry of course, but I don't know if this would have any detrimental effects long-term.

Dr. Park (ENT and sleep specialist) on TRDs in 2009:
"I have patients stick out their tongue whenever I examine the space behind the tongue while they’re lying flat on their backs. This is a rough estimate, but only in about one out of 4 times, do I see any significant improvement in the posterior airway space. This may explain why many patients don’t see any benefits." -- http://doctorstevenpark.com/tongue-reta ... es-it-work

There was, or is, a product on the market that purports to do just that. It's a pacifier looking thing with a suction bulb that grasps the tongue and holds it extended. Might work...in one out of four.

Gramps bought one - Good Morning Snore Solution. He wanted to use it for short naps. After I started CPAP, I dug it out of the drawer and tried it a few times for naps. Both of us found it uncomfortable. More importantly, when we fell asleep, it felt like we were still having many apneas.

Or a 80 lb test fishing line tied to a 1 lb weight hanging over the side of the bed, if you can still pull your tongue in , increase the weight. The bar might fall out and hit you in the eye. Jim

Ha! Maybe I’m not crazy, since someone else thought of the same idea.

You could tattoo a warning under the ring, "If found choking from Sleep Apnea, Pull On Ring". Jim

Might even hook a small Bell onto the ring, so it would wake you up.

On second thought, XPAP isn't that hard to use, and it works!

Interesting:
Using the device led to an increase of apnea
