America's Favorite Bedside Companion?

From a weekly newsletter.....

America's Favorite Bedside Companion?

Various scientific studies have linked smartphone usage in bed to inferior quality of sleep, and yet, millions of Americans cannot resist the allure of checking their Twitter timeline one more time before falling asleep. According to research conducted by Deloitte, 14 percent of smartphone owners in the U.S. check their smartphone immediately before trying to go to sleep and 35 percent do so within 5 minutes.

While many smartphone manufacturers now equip their devices with a so called night mode to limit the negative effects of bedside smartphone use, these are merely filtering out blue light which suppresses the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep cycles. What these “night modes” cannot do is limit the negative effects that smartphones and their steady stream of stimulation have on people’s ability to unwind and fall asleep.

It’s not just at night that smartphones make for an unhealthy but popular bedside companion. Checking your phone right after waking up isn’t the best idea either. Instead of waking up slowly and sorting their thoughts for the day ahead, smartphones divert people’s attention away from their own thoughts by confronting them with the outside world immediately. As our chart illustrates, early morning smartphone use is nearly as prevalent as it is late at night.

I disagree. My favorite bed side companion is my sleep mask, res med machine and the so clean . Cannot think of another thing.

My fifty-something sister is in the throes of Smartphone addiction having only purchased one a year ago, so I have to agree with the study. Smartphones can seriously impair sleep hygiene. I do have an ITouch and Echo in my bedroom, but at night they are only used to provide ocean waves noises to reduce tinnitus sound and in the morning as an alarm clock. I'm too groggy until after my cup of coffee to even talk to family members much less listen to the world outside on an electronic device. Alas, CPAP doesn't eliminate all my sleep issues.

Edited to add: I don't have a smartphone. Just a flip phone.

How does your husband feel about that?

She's not satisfied by the Sleep Mask, I feel for him. You can try more masks (If you have great INS, like Does!) But, Husbands are in shorter supply and harder to get rid of. Jim

Even if you dream of Matt Lauer drilling you.

The only mine is in the bedroom is when it is being charged (I have the chargers set up there) and when I need to get up early in the morning. I hear the alarm on the smart phone much better than the one on the clock radio.

What has this got to do with the topic? Have you read the post or do you just post anything on your mind?

I did not start this topic. And yes I just post anything on my mind. Just about like you do LS and Goof. . The best thing we can do is ignore each other. Lets start right now.

BedSIDE companion: my pretty white Airsense
BED companion: the "bullfrog", of course!
After 49 and a half years of being in harness together, I cannot imagine a better partner.

I think he has made me laugh every day since we first met.
Lately, all I have to do is look at him. Funny in so many ways.

I agree with article. I know I have to put my down and not touch it for at least 30 minutes before I have any hope of falling asleep. Things that used to make it tough were really active forums where a thread is blowing up lol.
