how long to see improvements

Post by user232 » Sun Oct 08, 2017 3:45 pm

Third night in, My sleepyhead results look great. AHI 1.07 last night.
But I don't feel much better at all. Feel a bit disoriented and tired on waking up and throughout day, exactly what I was trying to solve.
Woke up several times from 1) itching nose, manipulated mask to get there 2) waking up from nightmares/weird dreams of foreign object on me 3) several cold (leak?) bursts wake me 4) many wakes to readjust frame to minimize cold leaks
Fitbit cooborates several awakes (did not have those kind of mid night awakes before CPAP).

Does this seem common at the beginning?
I'll add that bumping min ramp from 5 to 6.66 helped initial breathing a lot after first night.

Yes, it takes some time to get used to sleeping with stuff hanging on your face. At least for some folks. give it some time before you start worrying about changing things.

After you have found a well fitting and at least semi comfortable mask, after your brain accepts all the new sensations as your new normal, after your treatment is for certain therapeutic, after you are on most nights getting adequate quantity and decent quality of sleep, you should begin to experience appreciable signs of recovery. Probably not realistic to expect much before that, though some have been lucky. Give yourself some time to adjust and heal from what untreated sleep apnea has done to you. Recovery is a process. Some need it more than others, so there is not a predictable timeline.

SD shows sp02 drop and PC, pulse change, likely related to pulse oximiter readings.

Your O2 is not dropping that much, so I think its the normal scatter in your pulse oximeter, I don't think there is anything concerning there.

Thanks for the info. I don't know anything about those events, but the rest looks good as others have said. You will feel better with time. it took me 2 months to feel better, mostly due to leaks.

Keep us updated.

So far I have been doing everything I can but seemingly getting nowhere and I'm going on 3 months - but I'm not giving up yet.

I finally gave in to leaks and tried a FFM - it was a miserable failure. I took it off after an hour because IF I managed to get to sleep, I soon woke up to face farts from leaks. I was so tired I didn't bother to mess around and put on my nasal mask. That was a mistake. I woke my wife up from snoring, woke up with a nasty headache, and a backache.

So tonight I'm back to my nasal mask and 20% large leak rate with bunch of untreated hypopneas (because my mouth blows open when pressure goes high to treat the hypopnea).

I tried painters tape the night before but it didn't stick worth a crap.

The end result of this weekend is that even though I feel like I'm not benefiting (SH agrees my sleep is awful), I actually have had a minuscule improvement.

I just don't know how long I can keep banging my head against the wall.

I saw the image just fine.
You aren't having all that many centrals. Your AHI is less than 1.07.

Actually very common in the beginning. It takes a while to get used to sleeping with the alien plastered on your face.
You aren't getting good solid sleep when you know you are waking often from an itchy nose or leak or just to feel the mask on your face or whatever causes you to wake up often.
Fragmented sleep for any reason will mess with your sleep quality and that in turn messes with how you feel during the day.
12 hours of highly fragmented sleep is going to leave a person feeling like crap.

There's more to this therapy than just slapping the mask on and getting some sleep. It has to be good sleep too.

While some people do get lucky and feel markedly improved after the first couple of nights most people do not. It can take weeks and even months to start feeling those nice low AHI numbers. 3 nights is simply too soon to expect to see a huge remarkable change.
Heck 3 weeks might be too soon.

When I first started therapy I saw improvement after about 2 weeks in a couple of areas but as far as energy levels...that took months.
