CPAP Gets Louder Overnight

Post by SangreJoven » Thu Sep 07, 2017 12:40 pm

Hello everyone. I'm new to CPAP therapy (I got my machine on August 30th), and I'm still trying to get adjusted. So far I've managed to get much better sleep, but my wife keeps telling me that my machine is too loud. Well, actually the machine is essentially silent, but she complains about the air noise. It starts out quiet, and then the air noise gets louder as the night progresses (usually around the 5 hour mark). I have a brand new ResMed AirSense 10, and a Phillips Respironics Wisp nasal mask that I received from the VA. I have a "My Air" account, so it uploads my nightly sleep results to ResMed's cloud to keep track of everything. So far it's always told me that I've had a good mask seal during sleep, so I'm not sure what air noise my wife is hearing. The first 2 nights I had "Ramp" turned off (now it's set to 45 minutes), so I don't think that's the issue because it would've been louder from the start. Is there anything you can recommend me to try, or is this completely normal? Thanks!

More likely you have an air leak from the mask shifting on your face during the night causing the increased noise or your mouth opens up to let air rush out. But then you would have a very dry mouth if the air was coming out there.

The machine itself would only get very slightly louder as pressure increases. Not to a great extent.

Post some charts from Sleepyhead and the fine folks here could give you an opinion.

Exactly which model AirSense 10 machine are you using?
Model name is clearly stated on the face of the machine.

AirSense 10 CPAP
AirSense 10 Elite
AirSense 10 AutoSet
AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her

which one??

Thanks for replying. That definitely makes some sense. I was wondering if I might be opening my mouth at night too, so the VA said they'd send me a chin strap. I haven't received it yet, so I'll have to report back once I get it.

Good...full data machine.

Let's see what the pressure is doing in the middle of the night

Get SleepyHead software
https://sleep.tnet.com/equipment

Learn how to post an image of the detailed report so we can see what you see

examples here

Then we can rule in or out machine or leak or whatever and go from there.

Wow, thanks for all the info! My laptop is REALLY slow, so I'll have to try to get the software soon. My wife just gave birth to our new baby boy, so idk when I'll have the time unfortunately.

I'll definitely post up here when I do, though.

Does your sleep position change at night? Is it possible that the exhaust from your mask is hitting the bedding? That will make it louder.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I usually start off laying on my back, and end up on my left side. Is there anything I can try to rule this out?

Ask her to take note of what the sounds are. We can have different sounds like hissing, farting noises, etc depending on what is happening. And ask her to look and see if the air is hitting something. I have woken myself up with the air hitting a pillow. Since the sounds are bothering her, you will need her help to figure out what is actually causing them.

Well, here is a video she took a few feet away from me on her side of the bed.

And here is a video of me that next morning. I was opening my mouth to see if that was noise she heard. She still said it was different so idk.

Hopefully it's something you can figure out and change. I noticed some nights that I'm way more sensitive to sounds than others. I'll have nights where the machine/mask noise seems real loud. It will drive me crazy and keep me awake even though everything is operating normally. My guess is it's related to caffeine, stress, anxiety or something like that. Never have been able to figure it out or done much research into it. Doesn't happen often enough.

Based on my experience, having a newborn does not help the sleep experience...

But congrats anyway!
