In Case of Hurricane ...

Post by DeeCPAP » Tue Sep 05, 2017 12:33 am

Two questions:

Is there any particular preparation we can take in case of a hurricane?

What should we do if we have to go to a shelter?

Thanks!

Good idea to think of these things before they may be needed!

Try this site on "What to Take to a Shelter" from the Florida Division of Emergency Management--looks like a reputable site:

Forget buying water... the water never goes out.
- get batteries and a flashlight(s). There are some good lanterns that are reasonably priced.
- bring in anything that can blow away. Lawn furniture, etc...
- If you live directly on the coast, you could board up windows.
- take pictures of all your appliances and furniture. Get an inventory. If they get ruined, you need to take shots of the ruined furniture before you get rid of it.
- buy beer
- when the power goes out, turn off your air conditioner until the power goes back on. The power surges will ruin the motor. Do the same for TV's and fridge. I lost my fridge in Harvey.
- did I say buy beer???
- Hunker down

I think bringing the cpap would fall under 30 day supply of medicine.

Good to see you are back on line again. We were worried about you.
Also good to see you haven't lost your sense of humor. I imagine a person would need a lot of that (and beer) in your situation.

The news reports say it's now a category 5.

Yeah the beer is for after it hits. I hit the beer before charley hit in 2004 and that wold have been bad had charley not gone south, and the looters showed up everywhere anyway.

.now why didn't I order those portable solar panels sooner...

Pack a fair sized pack to store your common sense in, it's the most useful thing you can carry. The downside, many could get by storing it in a pants pocket and have room left over for keys and beer. Jim

The point is to bring it with you.

Keep in mind that list is a guide and not Federal Law, you are allowed to deviate.

Some people have mentioned in the past to have something that generates electricity (like a hand crank generator) for your cpap/autopap if you are unable to get power and unable to get to a shelter.

I live in WI, we don't get hurricanes so I can't give you many tips on that one. Sorry.

Gas shortages should start tonight. The Sams club here is down to 2-3 hours of gas after multiple trucks replenished. Need more gas deliveries!

But i did get a backup AGM and an extra tender for my cpap power.

185 mph...

The wiindow of opportunity to flee north is wide open, but the window is starting to close. Everyone will flee at the same time turning the highways into a parking lot, and all hotels will be booked by then......

Edit...and the solar battery charger will be in on time, now I charge the batteries from the living room after Irma takes the roof off.
