How bad were my sleep study stats?

Post by bugo » Sun Jul 30, 2017 1:22 am

I had my sleep study done a year ago. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and was prescribed a CPAP machine. I received the results a couple of weeks after I took the test. Here are some of the numbers that stand out:

Epworth Sleepiness Score 13
Total time in bed 392.6 min
Total sleep time 310.5 minutes
Sleep efficiency 79.1%
Sleep latency 19 min
REM latency 330 min
Arousals 46
Arousal Index 7.4/hr
Spontaneous arousals 28
Respiratory arousals 6
Limb movement arousals 12
Total apneas 98
Obstructive apneas 77
Central apneas 21
Mixed apneas 0
Hypoapneas 8
Respiratory disturbance events 106
AHI 20.5/hr
RDI 20.5/hr
REM AHI 101.4/hr
Supine AHI 10.2/hr

Do any of these numbers stand out to you? I understand the REM AHI is rather elevated.

Based on the AHI and RDI, your apnea is officially considered moderate sleep apnea. But if you don't have a typo in that REM AHI, your apnea is extremely severe in REM. Once the apnea is in the moderate range, most docs suggest treating it even if you don't feel particularly sleepy in the daytime.

Given these event counts:
Obstructive apneas 77
Central apneas 21
Mixed apneas 0
Hypoapneas 8
Most of your problem appears to be obstructive sleep apnea with a bit of central apneas mixed in. Probably not enough to catch a doc's attention, but enough to be worth watching once you start CPAP.

If 12 of your limb movements caused arousals there were probably quite a few more that didn't. Did your limb movements resolve with CPAP treatment?

101.4 was not a typo. I was surprised it was that high too. I thought I slept well that night.

Apart from the extremely high REM AHI what also stands out to me is that you took a very long time to get into REM sleep. (REM latency 330 minutes).
