Noisy motor Resmed Aircurve 10 VAuto

Post by RonS » Fri May 19, 2017 7:32 pm

Hi All...

I have been PAPping for about a decade, always used (craigslist) machines. Just got my first "new" machine from a DME (has almost 1,000 hours on it). It's a Resmed Aircurve10 VAUTO that seems really loud. Not air noise, not whooshing, not whistling.

I plan on demanding (Ha! lets see how THAT goes!) a new machine, but I don't want this model if this is the way they all sound. I did a quick video of what it sounds like. Forgive me for sounding nasal, I was wearing the mask:

I'm not familiar with this model... does this sound normal to people familiar with this type of Resmed?

I look forward to your comments -humorous is great- but I'd like a few serious comments too!

Thanks
Ron

Not familiar with the ResMed, but that is certainly NOT a sound I would be comfortable with; I wouldn't be able to go to sleep at all.

I hope you can get the issue figured out.

I have had several ResMed machines over the years and currently also have an AirCurve 10 machine.
That noise is NOT normal and NOT acceptable.
The DME shouldn't be trying to pawn off a used machine with 1,000 hours that is that noisy which is likely why it was returned.
Not only is it not normal and not acceptable that noise could possible be a precursor to motor failure.

I listened/watched to the video and my husband was sitting about 6 feet away...he said "why are you watching cows"

I too have an Aircurve 10 Vauto and it does not hardly make any noise. I would certainly take the machine back to your DME.

Sounds weird. My aircurve is very quiet. If that noise is coming from the machine (and not the mask), something ain't right. Is the humidifier all the way in place?

Yup, the humidifier was in place, but empty. The noise is concentrated at the air intake/filter, and it was the same when I filled the reservoir.

I have a call in to Apria (the only in-network DME for Aetna, apparently), but given their reputation and my experience getting them to call me when getting the machine to give them cash.... I expect a long road ahead.

It really sux... or blows.... or doesn't blow- Ya get excited for a brand new machine you spend 1/3 of your life attached to your face like an octopus on a clam (your very first new machine, and you spend a giant chunk of change on it) .... and then this crap. I'd cry but then I wouldn't be able to breathe,

no way to tell from a utoob video and uncalibrated level on an uncalibrated pc speaker

get a sound meter and measure the level at your machine
compare to the specs they claim
It appears to be the particular sound..not specifically the sound level that he is concerned about

Your post speaks words of wisdom. It's why it was returned; it has too many hours to go out as a new machine, it does sound like cows and yeah, I think the motor is going to fail.
LSAT wrote:It appears to be the particular sound..not specifically the sound level that he is concerned about
It's both...

This thing is pretty clearly defective when I think about it. I just wanted to make sure before I throw it back at the DME.

You can hear it in the next room.

In the meantime, down below the mattress level so there's no direct path of sound to me it makes it seem only as loud as a woman lightly snoring, so I was able to sleep with it until Monday. Or I can go back to my ancient CPAP back-back-up.

THANK YOU ALL any other thoughts still welcome. Such as: Anyone ever get Apria to replace a machine?

Got a new machine! just took one phone call (and another drive to the DME's office)

Old machine (same video)

I think the folks who have or have had a similar machine could tell with a fair amount of certainty that it wasn't normal!
I just read they claim 33 or 37 decibels, which is awfully darn quiet, somewhere between a whisper and a babbling brook.

The DME couldn't have been nicer. I got to meet the respiratory tech this time, too. She tells me this is EXACTLY the way the machines most commonly fail

Brand new machine, brought them another script I have that specified a heated hose so they gave me the ClimateAir hose, and I wound up with yet another new tube, a slimline, and an extra humidifier. So all in all, I'm a happy camper who is ready for bed!

Now, I just hope it's either a nonissue or I can figure out how to import the new card into sleepy head in the morning.

Niteynight all!
