Ever wondered about "mask fit"?

Post by palerider » Wed Mar 29, 2017 8:55 am

Someone asked me "what pressure does mask fit use on an autoset, your max setting?" and I had no answer, I don't remember anybody every saying, so, I broke out the manometer and the autoset, and gave it a try.

in cpap mode, the mask fit ramped up to whatever the set pressure was.. (and breathing at 20cm and no EPR was a bit of work!).

in autoset, strangely, the mask fit pressure always went to 15, even if the max pressure was lower, or higher. the one thing i didn't try was to set the min pressure above 15.

interesting, maybe?

I thought I read somewhere that it used the maximum pressure. I assumed the max set pressure.
I had issues with the mask test with the Amara View but had no leaks on my current 5 minimum - 10 maximum settings.

that's what others have thought, but not what the manometer reports.

You know in all my experiments I have never ever used the mask fit feature on any machine.

I did when I was first starting out "way back when"(tm), 'course with the p10, there's not much point.

I found it useful with full face masks. I found leakage sometimes varies according to pressure. The higher pressure of mask fit makes it easier for reduce leakage, IMO.

Yeah...not much point with any of the nasal pillow masks I have used.
I can see its potential usefulness with the other masks and especially with newbies who tend to crank down masks too tight anyway and are likely using apap with the pressures going wild all over the place at first.
I just haven't ever used it or really felt the need. Even when I was dialing in the Amara View but of course by then I was far from being a newbie and had a pretty good handle on mask fitting in general.

I used the feature a few times, when just starting out.
Now, I simply adjust until I do NOT have noticeable air blowing where it does not belong.

Except when the pressure starts up low and leakage is OK. Then you wake up to leaks & groggily try to adjust things.

If it wakes me up, I readjust the mask's position on my face.
I can do this when barely awake now.

I agree with the P10 but not as much when a FFM is blowing in your face/eyes.

When using an auto you should adjust the straps with the pressure at it highest and while you are in your sleeping position. As the pressure increases the force on the straps increases and can lead to leaks. So adjust mask at the highest possible pressure before you go to sleep.
