That's bullcrap. In the 1800s homes were heated with wood, coal and whatever else would burn. Indoor air pollution was horrible - real toxins.HoseCrusher wrote:

Sewer systems ran straight to the nearest river - no treatment plants and no treatment chemicals. Chamber pots were often emptied in the alley. Outhouses were often of the open-back type - when it rained, the waste went to the nearest creek.
Our food supply today is miles safer than in the 1800s. We have the FDA, the USDA and local health departments. We also have a strict tort law system that severely punishes anyone producing or selling unsafe food. Farmers and other food suppliers use testing systems that were not even dreamed of in the 1800s.
