Recently Diagnosed - Next Steps?
Recently Diagnosed - Next Steps?
Hello,
In 2011, a sleep study showed that I stopped breathing and I was put on a Bi-Pap machine. I thought it was a simple process. Put the mask on and it would all get better. But I was wrong about many a thing. I never bothered bringing the data chip to the therapy center. I never had adjustments or tweaks. I had no idea what I was involved in. After 3 months, I gave up.
Fast forward 6 years later and I can not ignore my symptoms anymore.
*Exhaustion
*Morning headaches
*Brain Fog (the worst symptom I have)
*Confusion
*Poor Memory
*Depression
*Anxiety
*HBP
*Declined Cognitive skill
*Tinnitus
*Irritability and agitation
*Only doing the bare minimum in life
A recent sleep study showed that I suffer from Moderate-Severe sleep apnea. Apparently I stop breathing almost 40 times an hour. I was not surprised that I stop breathing, but was stunned by the amount times I actually stopped breathing.
I am 42 and am worried I have done permanent damage. I go back next week to sleep with the mask on. I am ready to finally take this seriously. I only hope it is not too late. I can not continue on like this. Every day is such a chore.
Thanks for listening.

Do you have any questions?
Do you know the importance of only accepting a good model machine to begin with and not getting stuck with a "brick"?

You have a BiPAP, that is good. It is very likely because you demonstrated needs for special treatment in your 2011 study. Any chance you have it and can upload it? Do you know what types of apnea they found in your study?
please let us know.

Re: Recently Diagnosed - Next Steps?
Boy, do I know how that feels!! I'm three weeks into my therapy, and I can fully empathize.I thought it was a simple process. Put the mask on and it would all get better. .... I had no idea what I was involved in.
But it really is all about the tweaks and adjustments. Docs and DMEs can throw a mask and machine at you, and read machine data (if they can see it), but no one knows how this is impacting your life and sleep like you do. And if you don't tell someone and begin to ask questions, you'll never get any better. It is a process, and some tolerate it better than others. But it's never too late to start. Yeah, the best time was back then, but that ship has sailed and gone. No problem, there's another one coming up to you right now!!
Register for the forum -- no spams or other issues that I can tell. Let us know what machine and mask you have, and share any data you feel comfortable with. There's people on here that have this stuff well in hand and can help you through just about anything. That's why *I* am here!
Oh, and don't forget the newbie info and wiki links in the stickie posts on top of the forum. Lots of good reading (for the nights when you just can't fall asleep right away!). And the SleepyHead software is great - and free!

Hey guys and gals...not sure he has his new equipment yet or if he is going to be using the machine from 2011.
He said
I get the impression there is no old machine and he is starting out fresh all over again with new sleep studies and most likely new equipment.
So at this point there's nothing to add in the equipment profile.

I think I now know the importance of a good machine AND using it the way it was prescribed. Also to follow up with data readings.
What should be asking after my titration sleep study?

Yes, all registered now. I will update my settings asap.
My current machine is a BiPAP. I am not sure that is what they will give me this time. I barely use it. Heck, I still have the original nose pillows!! I grossly underestimated the severity of this condition.
Both times, (2011 and now), I was found to have obstruction SA.

Ill have to look the unit I have when I get home so that I can give proper information rather than, "its grey, has a dial, and some tubing".bonjour wrote:Welcome to the forum, we will be able to help you.

Re: Recently Diagnosed - Next Steps?
Another welcome here. I just wanted to say that we are very resiliant beings and now is the time to look ahead and know that with treatment you will make a difference in your health not only today but for years to come. It may take time to feel a difference with all the changes that cpap requires but know that you are making a difference and whether the feeling comes sooner or later that you will notice the change.BigBipper wrote: I am 42 and am worried I have done permanent damage. As soon as my mask issues were resolved, I noticed the change but for some it is more gradual. Because the feeling better may be gradual, we need to concentrate on getting the best therapy and know with better rest our body is healing.

I have been chasing these symptoms for 2 solid years now. To think it could have been on my nightstand all along. I will be thrilled if there is even a 25% improvement.

I have the machine from 2011 which is obviously not optimized. As stated earlier, I haven't even changed tubing or the nose pillows since 2011. I also have not been using it for months/years on end. I started the last few weeks, sporadically, but I know the bugger is leaking. And who knows if the current therapy settings are doing anything.
I have to act like I am starting fresh. But now much wiser for the wear.

Re: Recently Diagnosed - Next Steps?
Lack of oxygen and sleep deprivation can have serious impacts on our health. It usually takes a long time for damage to happen and get to the bad state that we are in. With that in mind it will likely take a good deal of time to fully heal and get back to a somewhat normal life. It may take time and diligence depending on your state of health and how quickly you rebound. There likely will be many ups and downs. Wish you a smooth journey and welcome to the forum.

What should be asking after my titration sleep study?
If you have a face-to-face with a medical professional, you might want to ask why the particular machine and mask were prescribed.
