Is it normal to breathe quick and shallow when sleeping?
My Sleepyhead on Pulse Ox data clearly show me when I am awake or asleep and even the in-between stages.
I notice that when I'm asleep my breathing rate goes way up but the volume of air is very low almost like I was panting but not that bad.
When awake my breating rate slows way down and the volume goes way up.
Is that normal?

I'll let others chime in as to what's "normal, but I can say that my patterns look like that. I think intentional wake breathing is always deeper and farther apart.

That sounds like my usual breathing pattern, and it appears to be the norm for a few others who have mentioned it.
I would guess that as long as your oxygen levels are in a healthy range you aren't breathing too fast or too shallow, as in you aren't hyperventilating.

Sleep breathing is controlled by a difference system then awake breathing.
On most people it tends to be very slow and shallow but different stages have different rates.

Mine tends to be slow and shallow most of the time when I am actually sleeping.

Willie, No one can give you a good answer, because you have only spoken of relative breathing rates. What is the actual rate while asleep (breaths per minute)?Arizona-Willie wrote:I notice that when I'm asleep my breathing rate goes way up
The typical respiratory rate for a healthy adult at rest or asleep is -
Adults: 12-18-breaths per minute.
Elderly ≥ 65 years old: 12-28 breaths per minute.
Elderly ≥ 80 years old: 10-30 breaths per minute.

I'll try to post a pic of today's Sleepyhead. Haven't posted here in a long time.

When I am sleeping, my breathing looks like yours did during the first part of the night. However, when I am laying there awake, my breathing looks more like yours did when the respiration rate dropped and the tidal volume went up.

Photobucket! Get an imgur.com account. Photobucket is loaded with popup ads and videos which make it an unpleasant experience.Arizona-Willie wrote:http://i816.photobucket.com/albums/zz85 ... 202017.png

I didn't know Photobucket was problematic. Been using it for years ... will look into imgur.
