Re: How Can I sell my almost new ResMed Airsense 10
Like everyone else I urge you to keep trying, I've only been on it 2 months and I no longer wake with headaches, don't feel like I'm going to fall asleep at my desk at work, etc. I even fell asleep waiting at a light one time and bumped the car ahead of me. All that is gone! Can your primary doc give you something better than the otc sleep meds you have tried? Just for a short period. It really is so worth how I feel now. I don't know what all you've tried. I used essential oil on a cotton ball behind my filter with lavender and sweet orange, both calming and to get rid of any funny hose smell. I use a sound machine, have for years to block out sounds and it helps with any cpap related noise too. At first I lay awake thinking only of the face that I had a mask on and about what a pain it all was. I really had to train my head not to think of that, I started to think of vacations, my work day, my granddaughter, anything to take my mind off that new creature on my face. Every time my mind drifted back to the cpap I forced my mind to other things. Good luck, once you get over the hump and see how much better you feel you will be very happy you stuck with it.

I had to try about six different masks, extensively playing with ramp, EPR, and climate control, and a new pillow to get myself tolerating it. Now I actually find it relaxing to go to bed with it and definitely enjoy being well rested. I truly thought I would never tolerate it, now I miss it if I try and sleep without it.

My 2 cents... you have to explain to your doctor what you have said here. It's hard for me to understand why your doctor won't prescribe something to help you sleep, just until you get over the hump. If your doctor won't do it, I'm sure you know that your PCP could prescribe a sleep aid (not sure if you are talking about your PCP or a sleep specialist). My friend's dentist prescribed 10 I think it was... at least it was something.
I'm also thinking you need to try another mask; perhaps something minimal, like the Airfit P10 or the Swift FX. My thinking is that something minimal would help you forget about the mask. Even if you need a FFM, could be that a more minimal mask might be a step in the right direction.
I hope you exhaust every avenue before you sell your machine. Let us know how it goes.
Edit: Just realized you presently use a Swift FX... apologies.

Re: How Can I sell my almost new ResMed Airsense 10
I just started CPAP on Feb 8, 2016 using the ResMed Airsense 10. I had a sleep study with AHI = 83, using Airsense 10 and F10 mask at split study AHI = 29. I have never felt fatigue or excess sleepiness. Could drive 500-600 miles in a day on vacation and not get sleepy. I could not believe I had SA. But seeing my AHI was a wake up call. The mask and all the other experiences are a rear put-off. But do some research on the Internet and you will see what neglecting to use the CPAP could entail with respect to your future well being. However, you must firmly decide that your are going to continue and be successful. After 1 week AHI = 4 - 7 but I am more fatigued now after the first week than ever before - less sleep. Probably equipment phobia (see below). I am hard of hearing (Aviator hearing damage) so it is not noise but air leaks wake me often as the machine tells me. But I keep it on 6-7 hours and it is getting better. Sometimes knowing about unrecognized anxiety can help to dissipate the anxiety.
One suggestion. See if there is a psychologist in your are that uses hypnosis. Hypnosis might be a way to overcome the hyper-alertness that is keeping you from sleeping. I had some similar experience years ago when I was in flight training as a Naval Aviator - wearing a full face oxygen mask caused me to hyperventilate and I would use oxygen very rapidly. Military psychologist using hypnosis was very successful in treating my underlying, but unrecognized, anxiety ( not claustrophobic) reaction. Give it a try. Good luck. And keep trying. Do not give up the ultimate goal is way too important to you and your family.

search for 'mask liners' here on the forum, or visit padacheek.com, the liners won't prevent leaks, but they'll tame them so they're much much less annoying and disturbing. when I found out about them, they were a game changer for me.Eddy wrote:After 1 week AHI = 4 - 7 but I am more fatigued now after the first week than ever before - less sleep. What has helped many people is wearing the mask or pillows and using the cpap machine while you are awake and doing other things, like watching tv or surfing the net. You want your face to just get used to it being there. Then it won't bother you at night. Make sure that you have the minimum pressure high enough that you don't feel starved for air.

Have you tried different masks? Hoe about pressure changes? There are many things that can be done to help you. Just let us know what problems you are having, and we will help you. For example, what is your starting pressure? Some people have trouble with that and need some adjustments to make it work.

Re: How Can I sell my almost new ResMed Airsense 10
Thanks for the tip. I found Remzzzs liners for the F10 FFM. Not cheap at $25 per 30 days but worth every penny. Leak rate down around 10 L/M with almost no time above 24 L/M ... ony spikes I suspect are when I move or change sides. Makes the FFM more comfortable also ... silicon tended to stick to my face as I have fairly oily skin. Also found a buckwheat hull pillow with shredded foam ($49 on AMAZON) that really works. Supports neck, keeps the shape you put it in and will keep a "divot" for the mask when on my side. Memory foam pushes mask around causeing leaks. No push back with the buckwheat hull pillow and it is also cooler.search for 'mask liners' here on the forum, or visit padacheek.com, the liners won't prevent leaks, but they'll tame them so they're much much less annoying and disturbing. when I found out about them, they were a game changer for me.

they don't mention, because they want you to keep forking over ridiculous amounts of money for old tshirt cutouts, but you can wash 'em and reuse them over and over.Eddy wrote: I found Remzzzs liners for the F10 FFM. Not cheap at $25 per 30 days but worth every penny. .

They are way over priced indeed. But I do not think I want to spend the time cutting up an old tea shirt. I'll try washing them and see how that works out. I saw some called "Silent Night" that were touted as reusable. Anyone have experience with those liners?palerider wrote: they don't mention, because they want you to keep forking over ridiculous amounts of money for old tshirt cutouts, but you can wash 'em and reuse them over and over.

I've seen lots of people say they just toss their liners in a mesh bag, then toss that in the washer. I used a cloth liner for years, i'd just wash it weekly when I washed my ffm, and then let it dry.Eddy wrote:They are way over priced indeed. the best reusable mask liners are likely made by Karen at Padacheek.com... she's a member here, and a very nice lady who's more interested in helping you get good use of your mask than she is at making a buck. I don't think I've ever heard anything negative about her or her company.

Re: How Can I sell my almost new ResMed Airsense 10
I guess I've been very lucky, CPAP-wise. Fell asleep on the first night (about 10 yrs ago) and have been 100% compliant ever since.
Charbat, I think maybe you should have had a lab sleep study; the home study may have missed something. A home study is much cheaper, and is good as a screener, but is much less comprehensive. It's possible that your family doctor may be able to help you. And, as far as CPAP suppliers go, the Internet is your friend. Don't give up; demand a diagnosis.
I just had my 3rd sleep study (having worn out my machine.) It was a "split study," the first half of which was a sleepless disaster. It was obvious that it's now almost impossible for me to sleep without a CPAP. The Dr. told me, before the test, that he was going to prescribe an auto-set machine, but the scrip he sent the provider only says "CPAP, c-flex, 11 cm pressure." This was done without having me come in for a follow-up appointment. I informed the supplier that I was not accepting the non-auto machine until after I see the dr. for a review of sleep study findings. It's a good thing I have a back-up machine!

Charbat I understand your frustration but you need to keep trying. I wear respirators for work and still have a little bit of trouble dozing off some nights. I am not sure if it is a fear of suffocation or what but I have laid there for an hr or more a few nights.charbat wrote:LSAT, I may "need" the cpap machine but I have never fallen asleep with the cpap since I purchased it. I lay there awake for hours, hence the 234 hours on the machine. I am way too tired trying to make it work. Doctor won't prescribe anything so I am at a loss.
What I have found is to try to relax, calm myself and slow my breathing down. I read somewhere to take several deep breaths and hold it for 5 seconds. Count your breaths in and out and try to go to 10, holding for 5 seconds on inhale and exhale. Do this 2-3 times. Think of floating in a balloon or on a boat. This usually slows my breathing down and I roll over and am out.
I think meditation and relaxing technics might help you. Look them up online.
You can do this.

Re: How Can I sell my almost new ResMed Airsense 10
I will add my 2 cents in the hope it will help, although I was unable to use a S10 machine..and this was after three years on a Philips 960 ASV machine..I had to switch to a DreamStation.
When I started on CPAP I already knew how I hated face masks from using them in my work as the hurt my nose and often leaked air into my eyes, so I asked for a Fitlife full face mask, these look a little like fireman masks and cover the eyes like a gas mask.
Being a Science Fiction fan I went to sleep trying to imagine I was on Mars wearing a Mars breathing system..next was a space suit, next was a diving unit..ETC.
The idea was to think of the mask as a good thing…
I also found that CPAP cured a lifelong problem of a stuffy nose, as the machine would clear out and keep clear my nose all night, I think that alone help my sleeping.
And another silly thing, I loved pulling the covers over my head from childhood, but you can only stay under them for so long before the air goes bad from re-breathing…with CPAP you can stay under ALL Night if you want…
So I found a few ways to see CPAP as Very Good Thing.
Hope this helps you and others.
I have been 100% compliant ever sense.
Rich

How to make mask liners from an old t-shirt.
Use a well washed t-shirt, lay it flat on the table, lay your mask on the t and draw all the way round the mask but adding about an inch to the pattern. Cut the pattern out and use it, as you know its a well washed t-shirt material, it will last ages. I cut my first one out on a bit of newspaper, then used that as my pattern, I used them for a very long time... until I discover Karen's padacheek liners that is .
Eddy, if you have a remzzz liner, just use that as your pattern, old t-shirt material is free, plus you already know it can be washed many times, unlike the remzz win! win!
