Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
Ten years after I began using my CPAP machine, I'm thinking of retiring it for a new one.
But I'm conflicted: the good old REMstar pro 2 is still working fine.
A newer machine will give me data output options, and will likely be smaller, lighter, and quieter, but how important is that?
Have any of you ever "upgraded" or replaced your first CPAP with a newer model? Was the machine being replaced still operable? Do you think it was worth the cost to you to get the features of a new machine?

that's entirely up to you. for me, data, quieter, smaller, lighter, in that descending order, are huge things.dvejr wrote:A newer machine will give me data output options, and will likely be smaller, lighter, and quieter, but how important is that?
I'm on my fourth machine.
your old one will die at some point, do have a spare waiting for that moment.

Yes - so I could have a back up machine in case one died unexpectedly.

Quite a few people love their old 'tanks' and more than a few have decided they need to buy a backup or two so that they'll never have to upgrade to the latest greatest. It's all up to you.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
Re: Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
I just did that very thing. I had a RemStar Pro M Series machine and replaced it with a PR-One A-Flex 60 series machine about four months ago. My old one of almost eight years was running fine, although occasionally making a strange noise. I felt it was best to go ahead and get a new one. And although the old one still works, I'm so glad I made the change. Love the new machine! I already have a couple of backups, but they're on the old side as well, so I really wanted a new one! The old machine provided great data for it's time, but PR-1 provides much more.

Something this essential should always have a Plan B.
If the old one is still working, it can be the spare.
You deserve the best. Really!

Another thing to consider is that a newer machine may have an algorithm that is more responsive to your needs.

It's only been 11 years, I'm going to wait until the old one gets broken in. Jim
I planted a money tree out back, but the instructions said to wait 14 years before the first harvest.

I have replaced mine and I now have 3 working machines...the quietness and data were important to me.

Re: Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
I bought two used machines from the same man on this forum because I didn't have insurance. Later I bought a new F&P so I could give those two away. Later I bought a used S9. Then I bought another one to give away and ended up keeping it for a while before giving it away. I had a couple more that was passed through my hands to be given away. Then I got my ASV and our sweet Pugsy gave me another ASV backup machine. I didn't realize that I had bought so many machines until just now.

Re: Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
I was using an APAP. On the suggestion of Pugsy I am now using a BIPAP. There was never any indication that a BIPAP would do any good....I just wanted to try it. I called http://www.secondwindcpap.com; Pale Rider showed me how to set it up. Purchased a Respironics - brand new for $884. Best thing I ever did. Now I have two really good machines.
Re: Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
Thanks to those who shared their experiences.
Now I'm going to search old threads for "APAP" to see what the conventional wisdom is about moving from an old CPAP to a modern, state-of-the-art APAP.

Re: Have you ever replaced your 1st CPAP with a newer model?
I can summarize my view... start out with the apap set with a minimum near your cpap pressure, the max can be left at max, or set a couple CMs above your cpap pressure, whatever makes you feel better.dvejr wrote:Thanks to those who shared their experiences.

you should have a very similar experience as on cpap, examine your data, and adjust.
if the pressure is never rising at all, you may have been getting more pressure than needed, and can try dropping the min gradually, if it's spiking up a lot, you likely had too little pressure in cpap mode.
that's how I go about it.
