You are 100% correct....there is a flapper valve there.

I had a FlexiFit full face mask that had a wonky flapper.
Every once in a while, I had to get the tweezers in there because the flapper would wedge itself open.
--usually if I coughed or sneezed, but sometimes simply at random.
Last mask I ever bought from that company.
