Thin again but sleep need CPAP?
Thin again but sleep need CPAP?
Thin again but sleep need CPAP?'''I lost 30 pounds. I am as thin as I was in high school some 30 odd years ago. I slept without my CPap mask last night and woke up from nightmares due to problems breathing. Why is this still happening? My neck size went down from 18 inches to 16 inches. Why am I still suffering from this ailment? I thought weight loss would help resolve this issue.
By the way, I love sleeping with the Cpap mask. I try to use it every night. It really helps my life. I must have taken it off while sleeping. I was just hoping that one day I wouldn't need it anymore.

Most of us have apnea first, then excess weight, likely caused by apnea.
It appears that you are not one of the lucky few that weight loss can help.
But, hey! YOU LOST WEIGHT! Congratulations!
Keep on using your machine.
Your body has already told you that you need it.

Re: Thin again but sleep need CPAP?
The majority of people who lose 'some' weight do not stop needing Cpap... generally only a very few who lose e.g. 100 lbs via bariatric (lap band, etc.) surgery are able to stop, and there's no guarantee that even they will be able to stop. It's definitely not all about weight... there are certain anatomic reasons for OSA in many people that never were related to weight.

There is still hope. They say it takes over a year for the skin to respond to weight loss. Maybe your flabby tissues will tighten up resulting in no need for the cpap in future.

If you can arrange to have another sleep study perhaps that might be of help. Or consider doing a Home Study.
I had my split-night study done at a sleep center in a hospital- They told me that once a person loses at least 20 lbs. another sleep study would be warranted.
In your case, you have lost quite a bit more than that.
Just my 2 cents.

It is possible to lose weight and for untreated apnea to improve, remain unchanged, or worsen.

Why would he waste resources on a sleep study when, tedburnsIII wrote:If you can arrange to have another sleep study perhaps that might be of help. Or consider doing a Home Study.

Besides, if he has a data-capable CPAP, there are easy ways to use it to check if he still needs it.

Re: Thin again but sleep need CPAP?
I've lost about 15 lbs. since April, and there is a definite change. I'm 5'6 and weigh 170 lbs. I need to lose about 10 more lbs.
I slept without the CPAP last night and feel crappy. Well, a different kind of crappy. I feel bad most days anyway, but the "quality" of bad differs. Also, this morning I had a frightening episode of sleep paralysis.
I'm wondering if I should get another home test. I never mentioned it here, but when I took a home test last year I was hammered. I don't know how much that will skew a test.
Also during a good part of 2013, I gained weight from beer, then Lexapro. It was early 2014 all this started.
