FlashPAP Java Wireless WiFi SDCard Transfer - Win/Mac/Linux

Post by Krelvin » Thu May 14, 2015 10:04 pm

Found a new app which uses Java which works with the Toshiba FlashAir II WiFi SDCards...

I've been using SleepMaster for some time on my primary workstation Win7 box... It has been working great. I don't see changing that any time soon. However, I have been looking for something similar on the macbook despite the fact I most likely won't use it there often, more for learning how it works and documenting the process.

Link to Website: http://www.cognitial.com/flashpap/flashpap.htm

The app uses Java which makes it work across multiple platforms. It is fairly easy to setup and use and had no problem supporting the configuration that I was already using on my FlashAir II for SleepMaster.

One thing it doesn't do is setup the FlashAir card like SleepMaster does, but once you have a configuration to use, it should be pretty straight forward.

Gives an option for Mac and Linux users and an option for Win7/Win8 users as well. I've only tried it on a macbook so far.

Found it announced on Apneaboard this morning when going through the posts. Original posted was back in early March.

App is Free just like SleepMaster.

BTW, one of the reasons why I stopped looking at my data 6 years ago was basically it was a pain in the ass. That was an M-Series machine which used a Smart card, I had the reader but I had to use Encore to read it, not really friendly and a much longer process than now with an SDcard and SleepyHead.

With my new S9 VPAP Auto that I got in Sept, the process was much easier, Sleepyhead is much easier to use but pulling the SDCard is still a pain and after a while I started doing it less often unless I really had to see what was going on. I was heading back to where I used to be. Also, how many times do you forget to put the card back into the CPAP??? Ugh!

When I first heard about the WiFi SDcards, I thought this might be helpful and it was when it worked... but there were some issues at first that eventually got ironed out. Now with FlashPAP there is as simple a system for the Mac and Linux for the same type of function.

With the ability to wirelessly pull the data without touching the SDCard enables me to check literally every morning, sometime late at night when I have to get up for a while as well.

When I take my mask off and sit up on the edge of the bed, I grab my Smartphone and remote into my workstation and fire up SleepMaster, it pulls the data down, go to sleepyhead and import and bam! my current data that I just did is right in front of me.

In the middle of the night looking at the data sometimes confirms that I was in fact having issues which was making me wake up and that getting up was the good option to get past it and eventually back to bed. When I wake up in the morning and see a less than stellar report I am close enough to what happened in the night to recall why and what was happening. If I wait until later in the day or days later, I rarely will remember what happened that night.

FlashPAP and Sleepmaster using the FlashAir II WiFi card really makes that a non-issue once you get the card and get it configured.

Seeing your data without touching the SDCard, makes checking your data simple and pain free.

This looks like a very convenient way to do our pap data monitoring. Can you flesh out the details for us who are unfamiliar. What's the price of the FlashAir II wifi card, FlashPAP and Sleepmaster? How is it assembled at the PC end? I assume you just insert the new SD in the pap machine. Is all this compatible with both PCs and Macs? And with ResMed and Respironics pap machines? Thanks, Krelvin, for the step up in technology.

I use SleepMaster daily with my Win7 workstation and have been for some time. It also supports Ubuntu with Wine but I have not tried that.

I am still playing with FlashAP which I have tested on both Win7 and Macbook (Yosemite). Some minor issues but it works well. I have not tried it on Linux.

Both software packages are free which is a great deal for what consists of a lot of effort and work of creating, testing and debugging.

I use the Toshiba Flash Air II Wireless 16 GB SD Memory Card (PFW016U-1BCW) roams around $24 - $33 with or without shipping. I've bought 2, one for $28 and one for $33. The most recent arrived as an W-03 version the previous as a W-02. Note this is a 16GB card which is way over kill for an CPAP but it is a class 10 card and works with both software package. There is also an 8GB version but it seems to not be priced correctly most of the time compared with the 16GB and of course there is a 32GB version which doesn't make sense for this type of project.

I have some pages about these on my resource pages:
SleepMaster - https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/sleepmaster
FlashPAP - WIP as I just found out about it the other day - https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/flashpap

This and the thread on apneaboard are good locations to ask questions to get more info or you can email both authors. Both are quite responsive to questions.
Thanks, Kelvin, for the step up in technology.

One of the biggest problems with the wireless SDcard systems is configuring the card itself so that it works.

Sleep Master, has a configuration process which does the work for you. After you configure it, and then use the machine to record some data, it normally works without too many isues.

FlashPAP, doesn't come with a configuration process.

Today, I spent time starting with a brand new 16GB Toshiba FlashAir II card right out of the box. I then created a config file manually and documented the process of testing to make sure the card was seen on the network.

Finally, I put it into my Resmed S9 VPAP Auto, used my mask for 12 mins and then used the FlashPAP application to find, locate what data is on the card and download the data.... Lastly importing it into SleepyHead to complete the process.

Worked!

Hopefully, this will help others that need to configure their cards to work.

The entire process with documentation, pics and config files are on the resources page at: https://sleep.tnet.com/resources/flashpap/manualconfig

Ref:
Tested with the card in STA (Station) Mode using a Resmed S9 VPAP Auto, FlashPAP version 1.1.1 and SleepyHead v0.9.8-1-Testing (OpenGL but that shouldn't matter).

Edited: Sorry, Krelvin. 'Kelvin' did roll off on those keys like second nature -- a permanent part of my school years vocabulary. Re. your latest project, you sure know how to have fun with new tech stuff. Ok, I'll bite for that card too. It's so annoying when the SD winds up spending the night in the wrong place -- more times than I like to admit.

Kevin (author of FlashPAP) has released an update. It corrects a couple small issues and provides some more internal functions like being able to scan for a card etc...

More info at:
http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread ... #pid114661

Been using it with 2 Win7 boxes and a macbook with Yosmite.

Thanks for the update. I just received my Toshiba FlashAir II (w-02) 16GB card. It's $19 now from Amazon, no doubt due to the newer FlashAir III priced at $40 for the same 16GB size memory.

In getting into the Fields (to be) Added or Changed on the card's CONFIG File, I notice two discrepancies when comparing that list with the list of fields changed/added in the changed new CONFIG File under [ Vendor ]; i.e., no APPMODE command has been added, and an APPAUTOTIME=0 command has been added but not shown in the Fields Added or Changed. Can you clarify those two?

Great idea and so well documented - thanks.

But, I have to admit, I started down this path then realized how simple it is to just pop my S9 card into my MacBook Air each morning (or two) and load data into sleepyhead.

What is it that is driving folks to use this technique?

And is anyone using it on two machines (with two cards or with one card shared)?

Advantage to me is I don't need to mess with the cpap itself. I just run one of the data retrieval apps, in this case FashPAP, it grabs the data, and you import it into sleepy head. You can even script it.

I an currently doing this on 3 computers, Sleep Master on my primary workstation, FlashPAP on my notebook and FlashPAP in my macbook. All the data is coming from the same cpap machine.

Both apps can work with multiple user profiles. Not sure how you would share a FlashAir card between two computers as that would require you to be moving the cards and defeat the purpose.

Note I can do the import from work if I didn't do it that morning just as easy.

I did, yes. (1) No APPMODE command has been added to the new Config list at top of the above linked page. (2) An APPAUTOTIME=0 command has been added to that new Config list, but is not shown in the lower "Fields Added or Changed were". Can you clarify those two?

APPMODE is in the original vendor config. Default from the vendor was for APPMODE=4 which is AP mode.

Using your manual config pages I "unhid" and found all three folders including the SD_WLAN and its CONFIG file. Without first loading the FlashAir software, I attempted to change the CONFIG file with the two changes noted in your pages plus a change to the CID to match the one on my card. No dice. The card Lock is in the Off position. The CONFIG file seems to be protected from any changes, no doubt because I'm missing something. Would it have made any difference had I first installed the software? I don't know and can't now check on that. At some point in the wee hours I inadvertently reformatted the card and the three card folders vamoosed. Can you copy and send so I can restore them? If not, I now have an additional 16GB SD that stores pictures, pap data, etc but can't transmit. My CONFIG file would look like:
