I nearly Forgot!

Post by Janknitz » Tue Mar 31, 2015 7:28 pm

It's my 4th anniversary on CPAP today.

I remember the dread and trepidation I started with and how many times I came this close to quitting but for the fact that I was at least smart enough to recognize that my life depended on it. My O2 sats were falling into the 70's every night without CPAP and my AHI was 83.

It took me months to make my peace with the machine. And probably years until I really truly got to the point where I just put on the mask, no big deal, and go to sleep.

My humidifier doesn't work thanks to PR's lousy engineering, but it's OK enough in Passover mode. (LOL, since it was Passover when I first started CPAP I thought that the "Passover mode" (my spell check capitalizes the word automatically) was some odd religious thing ) I love my Wisp mask--no pressure, no leaks, no discomforts. I clean it all sometimes

Thanks to CPAP I've been able to successfully change my diet and lose 75 lbs, and keep it OFF three years now. I have energy for exercise and my mood is upbeat and even.

More importantly, I'm alive. There were times when I really didn't think I'd still be here in 4 years.

I couldn't do it without this forum. Thank you to you all.

Yeah, I'm going into Passover mode myself here...cleaning all that chametz out of my mask

Congratulations! One day I hope to have a similar achievement....

Congratulations JanKnitz!

But I think it's actually your 5th anniversary, not your 4th. Your join date is listed as March 2010 and you were already a PAPer when I started my own CPAP journey in September 2010. (Edited to put the CORRECT date here. Thanks Den for pointing out my typo!)

So happy anniversary!

You came in ahead of me too. I went on the hose on April 15, 2010, while still lurking.
I actually signed on in July, but had already read tons of posts in dozens of threads.
Thanks to this forum, i knew what to ask for. Otherwise, I would have certainly wound up with a S8 Escape.

I would also suggest robysue reread her post and see if that last year she has listed makes sense.
I'm not going to quote her post in case she wishes to change it.

Time sure flies. Now you all know I can't count.

Hey, if it's 5 years I can get a new machine!

Janknitz, you have been a wonderful forum member! Congrats! I feel the same way as you. That is why I've stuck around... to give back the help this forum offered me. My first night on the mask was July 22, 2010.

Congrats, Jan! Five years is even better.

I took to the machine easily, but I fought with my mask for a long time. Now, it's like putting the mask on signals my brain that it's time to sleep, and I'm out in ten minutes or less. And like you, I have this forum to thank for getting me here. The DME and the sleep doc were useless; THIS place allowed me to become successful with my therapy. <sloppy wet kisses to everyone here>

OT: I found this recipe yesterday. If you don't already have it, it sounds good. Happy Pesach to you (and all who celebrate)!

Matzo Caramel Buttercrunch
(c) A Marcy Goldman, BetterBaking.Com Original Recipe
http://www.BetterBaking.Com

4-6 unsalted matzo boards or sheets
1 cup unsalted butter or unsalted Passover margarine
1 cup light brown sugar, packed firmly
3/4 cup chocolate chips or semi-sweet chocolate, coarsely chopped

Preheat oven to 350. Line doubled up, rimmed cookie sheets completely with foil. Cover bottom of pan with baking parchment, on top of foil. This is very important as mixture becomes sticky during baking. Line bottom of pan evenly with matzo boards, cutting extra pieces of matzo, as required, to fit any spaces on the cookie sheet as evenly as possible.

Combine margarine or butter and brown sugar in a 3 quart, heavy-bottomed, saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Continue cooking 3 more minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and spoon or pour over matzo.

Bake 15 minutes, checking every few minutes to make sure mixture is not burning. If it seems to be browning too quickly, remove from oven, lower heat to 325, and replace.

Remove from oven and sprinkle matzo boards immediately with chopped chocolate or chips. Let stand 5 minutes then spread melted chocolate over matzo. While still warm cut into squares or odd shapes. Chill in refrigerator until set. This makes a good gift. You can also serve it in confectioners’ paper cups as a candy.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

Den,

You caught me in an embarrassing typo.

I've gone back and edited the original post. Thanks for catching my mistake.

Just remember, you don't add yeast if you're using the humidifier in passover mode.

We should come up with an appropriate celebration for CPAP anniversaries.
