Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
Hi All,
I have been using Sleepyhead for about two weeks now downloading data every morning. I'm wondering if the times I've accessed the data will be noticed by the company? I live in Japan and a company rep was just here, took the SD card, gave me a new one, and told me that patients were never to have direct access to the data as it is a company secret and punishable by incarceration (of the person that supplied the data to the patient). See ya in 25 years. Hope I can take my ResMed S9 with me. I'll be very disappointed if they take my access away. Using Sleepyhead has been very enlightening, as has reading the jewels of experience from the members of this group. I really appreciate your contributions, thank you so much!

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
I don't know how they could take your access to data away without taking your whole machine away. Just be careful to write-protect the SD card before you put it in your computer. SleepyHead only reads the data, never alters it, but some computers (I believe it's mostly Macs and Win 8.1 machines) write invisible files to the data cards -- if you slide the silver tab on the card to the locked position each time you put it in your computer then you should be fine. Be sure to unlock it before you put it back in the S9 or the S9 will complain.
Welcome to the forum. If the CPAP police come after you, play dumb! "Data? What data? Oh, is that what that little card is for?" and so on...

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
Tell the rep you want to see the law where it says you can't access YOUR own data.
I don't believe they can tell on an SD card if you've accessed it. But someone with more knowledge should hopefully come along soon and put you right

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
The only scenario I can imagine where they would know that she accesses her data would be IF her computer wrote invisible files to the SD card, and IF it happened to cause a problem with the DME being able to read the data on their system, and IF they decided it was worth the troubleshooting time to find out why and IF they even know that some computers write hidden files to the card, and IF they happen to have someone on their staff who knows how to find those invisible files... so ridiculously unlikely. More likely scenario is IF the DME has trouble reading the card they'll assume it got corrupted somehow and will just issue a new card.mgaggie wrote:I don't believe they can tell on an SD card if you've accessed it. Well, the opinion of anyone here, even if they were a lawyer, doesn't mean anything in court. Doubly so if you're in Japan, and the "expert" isn't.
I suspect BS, but the medical mafia exists everywhere and has some draconian laws in some places. There have been a few cases in the US where someone has been harassed for "practicing medicine without a license" for expressing an opinion about some medical issue. If you're renting the machine, or it doesn't belong to you, there might be some sort of "computer hacking" law. There might also be some sort of "company secret" laws that could be used to harass you.
Japan is sometimes bat stuff crazy about such matters, but I think it's really unlikely any actual legal problems would arise. It's possible a bat stuff crazy "company rep" might stir up trouble of some kind, if it's in his power.
We do get a lot of the medical mafia, especially DME's here in the US telling people "it's illegal to change your own CPAP settings, but there don't seem to have been any raids yet.
What "company" was the "company rep" working for? The company you work for, or the company that supplied the CPAP machine? Is the machine a rental or do you own the machine?
If you're using Windows 8.1 or Apple, the PC may actually write something to the card, unless you lock the card before putting it into your PC. If this happens, the S9 machine will complain and will tell you something like "invalid SD card" and will offer to format the card.
I really doubt they'll figure it out unless you tell them. Act dumb if anyone asks.

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
There no way for anyone to know that you have pulled the SD card and accessed the data unless you volunteer that information.
Doesn't matter if the software was Sleepyhead or ResScan.
Now of course if you have changed something and they bother to look at prior settings then they will know that something was changed but even changing something doesn't mean that the SD card was pulled and data accessed because we can easily manually change a setting without doing anything to the SD card.
Neither software has any provision for any sort of "data was last accessed or downloaded" to be written to the SD card and ResScan has no way to know anyway and they will be using ResScan. There's nothing in ResScan that tells on you at all.

just to reassure you, sleepyhead *cannot* write to the sd card.... it's not programmed to.Lunasoul wrote:Hi All,

also, they lie to us over here in the usa all the time saying that patients can't have that data... so, might wanna check to see if they're lying to you too.

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
As people have written here, just flip the write protect tab on the SD card before inserting it into your PC. It's just a FLASH file system comparable to a USB thumb drive. If the PC can't write to it, it can't possibly leave any evidence that the SD card was ever anywhere but plugged into the CPAP machine.
The problem most of us have is remembering to take the SD card back out of the PC, flip the write protect tab back the other way, and put it back in the CPAP machine. The CPAP machine complains on the display if the write protect tab is set but if I don't have my reading glasses on, it's illegible. I've taken to reversing the machine 180 degrees when I pop the SD card to remind me to put it back.

On the off chance you are using windows 8.1, here is a link on how to disable the offending code in it. This article addresses all versions of Windows 8.1.

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
Thank you for your advice and reassurances! I went to my Dr. today and I left with my surreptitious ‘hacking’ undiscovered, and thus I remain a free woman in this respect.
As has been mentioned in other posts, my Dr. had a very simple report compared to what Sleepyhead has to offer, and he wasn’t up to date on the capabilities of newer CPAP machines to distinguish differences between central and obstructive apneas, etc. The Dr. was pleased with the data on his report and told me not to worry about it and to keep on doing what I was doing.
So for now, I’m keeping Sleepyhead, to myself. Finally, I can see where I’ve been and where I’m going. I enjoy and feel empowered by the daily feedback and am motivated to use the machine nightly. I’m also thinking of ways I can gently educate my Dr. within the confines of the Japanese culture, the Dr to patient relationship and my own conscience.
I also am very mindful when I handle the transfer of the SD card from the ResMed to my Mac and I have this forum to thank for that.
I appreciate your support!

Very good.
It's good to educate the doctors when you can. Some of them are good and willing to learn. Some have a god complex and take a dim view of heretics.
It's a shame our societies let doctors (and others) get away with their delusions of grandeur.

My PCP, my sleep doc, and my DME are all "keepers"
One can only hope the enlightenment will continue to spread.
Out of around ten DME's in town, I think he is the only one with a positive attitude about patient access to data.
It was worth the struggle to find him.

Re: Will SD chip show Sleepyhead data downloads?
When I saw my sleep doc in January, no mention was made of the fact that I upped my lower pressure from 8 to 9 last spring. I took several days of recent Sleepyhead reports in to show the doc, and he was impressed with my ability to access the data and monitor my therapy... I didn't tell him I had changed the pressure, but had a response ready in case that came up, which it didn't. Doc said, "whatever you're doing, keep on doing it - your numbers look good."

I suspect the reasons for scaring people with those kinds of threats is that they're worried people will try to hack the data to show better compliance and such. I suspect the people who could actually hack the data are the least concerned about the threats.
