When I need help, I want knowledgable opinions and a little laughter. I don't care if it is served up on a 2x4 or with white gloves. I will overlook words and attitudes, that I don't like to hear, to get the information and support that I need. I choose what I take away from here and leave behind what I don't like.

When I first came here, what I WANTED was tea, sympathy, and an excuse to quit CPAP. What I GOT was a quick kick in the bee hind--exactly what I NEEDED. Thank goodness!

I think it's fine for new people to come here to whine and vent, but they are in need of some tough love and that's what many of us give, sometimes (not always) along with the tea and sympathy. If our tough love scares them away they were probably never going to work at adjusting to CPAP anyway, so I don't waste my time mourning their loss.

The ones I really HATE are the "yes butters". They ask for help and then reject every suggestion (before trying) because they are so special they know it won't work for THEM. We take the time and make an effort to help, and I don't expect thanks but I don't like people who won't even TRY to do something in their own best interests because they love the attention from complaining. And their long stories about why they think it won't work are also a way of saying F-you to someone who dares to try to help.

Let me guess. You always insist on the pasture-fed butters?

I agree with Janknitz up to a point. I would never recommend this site to my grandmother because of how rough some newbies are treated. My mother, on the other hand, would be offended by people coddling and hand-holding. I don't think this site is for everyone but it's very helpful to those who can get along with or ignore some of the harsher folks.

I, personally, prefer nutter butters......
very tasty and refreshing w/an ice cold Gatoraid
on a rest stop when cycling.

I have no problem with whining, so long as it's not that old "I just can't do this, it's too hard" crap. I don't want to hear it. Exercise your other option, don't do it and your neighbors can read about it in the newspaper.

Of course you can do it, but you just haven't tried hard enough yet. Everything else I meet with sympathy, empathy and understanding. Really.

I'm a newbie, and I've been treated well. No complaints, and thankful to be here.

Having thought about this for many years, I think alot of the "reception" that new users receive depends on their "attitude" when they first post here.
If they seem to have a negative or "quitter" or "I hate this thing" attitude, they may be met with a similar type of response.
After all, we're here to try to help people get used to this therapy, and if it looks like they need the "tough love" approach, they may get it.
On the other hand, if they sincerely ask for help with just about anything, they'll get the "kid gloves" approach.

I also agree with "Janknitz" in that some people just want to complain or won't accept or acknowledge ideas or suggestions from others. And, some of those (one in particular comes to mind at the moment) who keep coming back with the same old whiny complaining and even after everyone tells them what they need to do.......won't do it.

And, even more oddly, one of those complainers has posted in this thread.
