I do believe that if you use CPAP for a while and then stop, you'll feel your apnea a lot more than you did before treatment for a while. Your body and brain do adjust to apnea to a certain extent. In particular, you will probably have problems sleeping without CPAP for a while if you suddenly stop.
I presume that after a while, you'd be back to the same level of discomfort as if you were never treated.
