It is not a valve. It is a plug that you remove before sleep. Anyone who is interested can read the book "Deadly Sleep" by Dr. Mack Jones. He describes the skin-lined tracheotomy and the removable plug that he has.

If you had started CPAP early in the course of your apnea, you may have never needed the heart surgery.

Do you know what he is talking about? I just searched the literature and could not find a reference to "stretching of the soft palate".

It would seem that "stretching" would make obstructive sleep apnea worse.
