Why Don't Suppliers Tell People About This?

Post by Thatgirl » Tue Dec 16, 2014 6:04 am

Using Smart Start has made the machine so much easier to use, since I have the cpap tucked in a cabinet on the floor. I love that feature! But I had to find out about it myself reading the manual, and the DME gave me the machine with it disabled by default. So glad I've found so many resources online!

For those who don't know some machines can tell when you put the mask on and
switch on by them self when they sense your breathing. I have one machine with
this feature and another one that doesn't have it. On the one that does have it I
often have to inhale and exhale very forcefully to trigger this self start.

From what I've seen, when removing the mask, SleepyHead will record this 5-6 second period as a large leak event. This then changes the stats. That's why I stopped using it. ResScan seems to have code to sense this and ignore it.

On my Airsense 10 it seems to be very easy to trigger Smart Start. I hold the mask to my face and its on before I've even clipped the straps.

See, a guy wouldn't do that-- he'd just keep mashing buttons till something happened.

resmeds are much more responsive to auto starting and stopping than the respironics machines.

make sure your mask setting is correct, the machine normally doesn't record a leak on a mask off situation when properly configured (at least, none of the four s9's I've had do.)

First thing I set when I got my machine home. Never push the button on or off.

I use it to start the machine, but I push the button to shut it off.
I doubt the first DME even knew about it--they were total clowns.

so many DMEs are borderline, if not outright, incompetent.

I love this. BTW, my machine seems to have it, but I don't care because pushing the button doesn't seem hugely challenging to me.

I keep my machine in a cabinet on the floor. It's not easy to reach from the bed without half rolling off. I grab my mask and pull it on the bed with me, then I read or mess with my phone for awhile, then put the mask on when I'm ready to sleep.

I don't know, it can be quite an effort to raise my arm and reach way over to the machine and find the start button, especially in the dark.
I might forget to turn it on half the time if it weren't for the auto on. You know CRS can be awful.

There's all kinds of features on the machines that DMEs won't bother telling you about. Personally I don't use the auto-on/off feature on my 560, but it's certainly there and I did try it out but like it better without. DME never mentioned it once. Another feature that they didn't mention that I do use every night is the pre-start on the humidifier. I've found that getting the humidifier warming up as I'm getting ready for bed gives me more consistent humidity from the start. Again, not mentioned once by the DME. Bottom line is to read your manual, do your own research, and don't trust your DME.
