Glycerin for a chaffed nose

Post by VictorC » Tue Nov 18, 2014 8:18 pm

Hello everyone!

When I started using my Airfit P10 I noticed that my nose chaffed a bit. I know that many creams and oils will break down rubbers over time. I also saw a suggestion on this forum for using pure lanolin, but don't want to go that route since my wife is allergic to it. I was wondering has anyone ever tried using glycerin?

Thanks!

Probably, I know some use Ayr gel or even K-Y jelly.
K-Y contains glycerine.

Glycerin is generally compatible with silicone and natural rubber. However, glycerin is hydroscopic. It will pull water out of your skin. It is a pretty lousy thing to put on irrigated skin. YMMV.

Had some chaffing until I went up a size on my P10 - better seal and less movement.

I believe that. I started with the medium pillows and suffered horrible chaffing. Since then I moved up to the large pillows and it is much better. However I still get some irritation after several nights of use.

That's funny, my situation was just the opposite. My chaffing was resolved by going down a pillow size. I guess the gist of this advice is perhaps your pillows are the wrong size. It's a good thing the kit comes with three different ones to try...

So long as it doesn't have the word "Nitro" ahead of "glycerin", it should be safe to use.

I found an all natural beeswax ointment (even beeswax lip balm in a pinch) worked as well as Lansinoh.

VERY curious as to her reasoning, since millions of nursing mothers and their babes can't be too wrong. Unless you have an allergy it would be ideal as it doesn't have any petroleum in it. Did she recommend a product of theirs as a substitute?

Read the ingredients list on the beeswax lip balm. Some contain petrolatum. (Vaseline).
Some people are opposed to the use of any animal product. (Including lanolin and beeswax)
I respect their choices, but not their efforts to limit mine.

I was told when I first started out that Lansinoh was the best for tender skin due to CPAP masks. They were absolutely correct! Thanks Pugsy It is a lanolin product found in the nursing section of the drug store. A little goes a very long way. I use (and still do when irritation presents itself) a QTip to apply. I squeeze out about a 16th of an inch and spread it around both nostrils.

Works like a champ.

PS I do not have any financial interest in Lansinoh, its manufacturer or retail establishments.

OOPS...nevermind...re-read your post and THEN noticed the allergy info....sorry...but it does work

Raw lanolin is composed of many different compounds, while allergy tests may only test for all at once.
In some cases, purification (like in Lansinoh) may remove one or more of the compounds to which a person is sensitive.
This may only be relevant if the sensitivity is mild, and not life-threatening.

Agree on all counts! I checked the ingredients on all the stuff I put on my face when I started CPAP and there were a couple nights I had to throw caution to the wind to save my nose, but I figured one or two nights with petro and a good wash in the a.m. were worth the risk.
