New cpap user- What to do if I wake up at night?
I have had my AirSense 10 autoset for only 3 days. Simple questions. When I wake us to use the bathroom should I turn the unit off or just let it run for a few minutes? Will turning it off affect the usage report? TY...Catman

Turn it off - it won't mess up your usage report, you'll just see a couple minute gap in your therapy reports if you are using any software like Sleepyhead and you'll know what the small gaps are. If you leave machine running it will be showing up as large leaks on your machine - you don't want that happening, it will mess up your leak statistics and the machine also attempts to compensate for leaks when it detects them.
I also like to see the breaks in the software reports so I can figure out how many times I am going to the bathroom at night - gives me an idea how much enlarged prostate is impacting my sleep - I had to throw that in

As an option that some use, you can turn on auto start. With it turned on, you really don't need to turn on or off your machine, when you put on the mask and start to breath, the machine will turn on without having to press the start button, and when you take off the Matt the machine will turn off automatically after a few moments again without pushing the button.

And those few moments will give you a very Large Leak to mess up the statistics.Krelvin wrote:As an option that some use, you can turn on auto start. Turn off the machine. You may leave your mask on or take it off. I do both...

Yes and Yes. Turn the machine off. It will affect the leak data in the report.Catman wrote:I have had my AirSense 10 autoset for only 3 days. Simple questions. nope... the resmed machines (which the OP has) are very responsive with their smartstart, they shut off within seconds of mask off, and have the common sense (better programming) to not report it as a leak.Wulfman... wrote:And those few moments will give you a very Large Leak to mess up the statistics.Krelvin wrote: and when you take off the mask the machine will turn off automatically after a few moments again without pushing the button.

That's what my puppet masters at the VA advised that I do too...it hasn't been off since I got it.

So.......if you have a Large Leak during the night when you're sleeping, the machine will turn itself off and terminate your therapy because it's "SMART"?palerider wrote:nope... the resmed machines (which the OP has) are very responsive with their smartstart, they shut off within seconds of mask off, and have the common sense (better programming) to not report it as a leak.Wulfman... wrote:And those few moments will give you a very Large Leak to mess up the statistics.Krelvin wrote: and when you take off the mask the machine will turn off automatically after a few moments again without pushing the button.
Another reason I'd never buy a ResMad machine.

Re: New cpap user- What to do if I wake up at night?
apparently the resmeds are smarter than you are, and are able to accurately differentiate between a "large leak" and a "mask off" situation.Wulfman... wrote:So.......if you have a Large Leak during the night when you're sleeping, the machine will turn itself off and terminate your therapy because it's "SMART"?

however, if you think about it, and not just make a knee jerk snide comment, if you're having a huge leak, then the machine turning itself off would allow the mask to reseal, and then it would turn itself back on (typically within two breaths) thus resuming your therapy, and resolving the large leak faster.
and, let's be honest, you'd never buy a machine by anybody made this decade...

Re: New cpap user- What to do if I wake up at night?
Depends on what caused the Large Leak. I've had Large Leaks that lasted for about 30 - 45 minutes without waking me up. They started abruptly and ended abruptly. I prefer my air to keep blowing through those situations.palerider wrote:apparently the resmeds are smarter than you are, and are able to accurately differentiate between a "large leak" and a "mask off" situation.Wulfman... wrote:So.......if you have a Large Leak during the night when you're sleeping, the machine will turn itself off and terminate your therapy because it's "SMART"?

And, I have no problem pushing the On/Off button on my machine (to turn it off) when I need to get up during the night.

you're avoiding the point. the machine doesn't turn off with a "large leak" or even a "huge leak".Wulfman... wrote:Depends on what caused the Large Leak. it only turns off when there's no appreciable back pressure.
it won't even turn off if you've got the mask selection set to a less restrictive mask than what you're using.
ie, the first time I tried a nasal pillow mask, I didn't change the mask selection to 'pillows' I left it on 'full face' and the machine didn't turn off when I removed the mask.
when I set the machine to expect the restriction of a pillow mask, it properly calculated that the mask had been removed and turned off.

Sorta like that dang seat belt buzzer on my car. Don't like a machine "thinking" for me either!
