I kept being awakened last night by a hissing sound. Every time I went back to sleep it would start again. I am a nose breather, but why is air forcing itself out of my closed mouth? I recently upped my low end pressure from 5 to 7; should I take it back down?

Re: SSSSSS
What kind of mask are you using - FF or nasal?
When you raise the pressure, more air will be forced out of whatever opening is handy, and if that's your mouth, higher pressure will exacerbate things. Lowering your pressure is not the answer unless you not only feel fine at 5, but your AHI and other factors are also good. You may want to look at a FF mask instead.

Re: SSSSSS
You need to keep your mouth SHUT to keep it from leaking out. The pressures you're using are practically nothing.Noctuary wrote:I kept being awoken last night by a hissing sound. Since you have nothing in your profile, we don't know if your machine is an Auto and you're using a range of pressures or what kind of mask you're using.......or anything else. It's hard to "guess" at what answer may help.
You mention your "low end pressure" but what's the maximum pressure? What do your software reports show?

Re: SSSSSS
The tongue is relaxing and not blocking the air that is going up the noise and down the airway.
When the tongue relaxes the air that is in the airway will try to exit out the first path it finds and that's into the mouth. If lips are closed we normally end up with chipmunk cheeks which eventually will force the lips to part...either a lot and cause a torrent of air out the mouth or maybe just a little parting and it's a slow leak or hsssss.
The tongue needs to do a better job of staying in place to keep the door closed. Easy to do while awake but when we go to sleep the tongue falls down on the job. The tongue needs to be retrained to stay in position and for some it can be done but for others the tongue wins.
Play with the tongue placement a bit while awake with the machine and mask on and you will see what I mean.
Normally if the tongue is placed (and stays there) in the roof of the mouth no air will enter the mouth so it won't ever try to leak out the lips.
No palerider...you aren't the only one. I can yawn, talk, open my mouth all I want with mask and machine on...and never have any air try to exit through the mouth. I can even stick out my tongue without the air exiting...there's something that I do involuntary that still keeps that back door closed. I can't describe what I do though.

I've never tried it because I've never tried to use anything other than a full face mask.

I use a nasal mask. My unit is set to APAP, pressure 7-20. Weird though; I feel better today than I have in a long time. Just the slightest fatigue.

Re: SSSSSS
Are you using software to monitor your therapy? Using an APAP in a range of pressures without software is like "flying blind".Noctuary wrote:I use a nasal mask. My unit is set to APAP, pressure 7-20. Weird though; I feel better today than I have in a long time. Just the slightest fatigue.
Edit: The machine you just selected for your profile is an S9 Escape.......not data and no pressure range. Maybe try again.

No software; I tried it with the Sleep Head, but it just crashes. I updated my machine; its a ResMed Escape Auto.Wulfman... wrote:Are you using software to monitor your therapy? Except the machine in your profile is the S9 Autoset. Still not the right one if you have the Escape Auto.Noctuary wrote:No software; I tried it with the Sleep Head, but it just crashes. Problem is, the Escape Auto is extremely limited in the data it will provide. I think about all it gives is AHI and hours used. No leak data or other pertinent information.

the escape auto collects almost no data and is not currently supported by sleepyhead as of 0.9.8-1Noctuary wrote: No software; I tried it with the Sleep Head, but it just crashes. I updated my machine; its a ResMed Escape Auto.

Same here, except I haven't tried the talking part. Retraining since on therapy, since it drove me crazy to open my mouth and have the windstorm.
