Poll: How many need an alarm to wake up?

Post by jnk » Fri Sep 19, 2014 8:03 am

"If you need an alarm clock to wake you up, by definition, you're not getting enough sleep."' -- Dr. Charles Czeisler, a sleep specialist at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, as quoted in an article in The Wall Street Journal, posted online Sept. 18, 2014 12:15 p.m. ET.

I need to get up at a specific time. Left to my own I seem to have a 25 hour cycle. Not useful in a 24 hour world.

I have always used an alarm as my natural sycle is not getting up at 5:30 am.

I have notitced though since I have been using the machine for a week, although not all night, I can get up pretty easy now when the alarm goes off, not hit snooze for 40 minutes.

I will probably still need to use an alarm, becaues my plan is to get up early again to work out before work like I used to, but physically cant now because Im so tired.

There needs to be another category: Without an alarm, I wake up around 4 pm.

Just kidding... Sorta!

I set mine every night
I have not been awaken from it in 10 years (even before CPAP)
Though before CPAP, I spent much of the night starring at it

Well, if one is fine with waking up at 4p, I guess maybe that could be considered a category 3.

What do I need an alarm for - I have Echo Cat! And he doesn't respect clocks, only the sun, so springtime is awful!

I typically start my day at work from home (online) and go into work later in the morning (typically there by 10am). I typically wake up on my own around 6:30am - 7:30am at the end of the sleep cycle I am in. If I don't need to get up, I just go back to sleep.

Alarms, alerts or pages that wake me up in the middle of a cycle are rough... as I am very sleepy and it takes a while to get fully awake.

On the rare occasions life requires me to get up at a set time, I rely on an alarm. However, if I've been in bed about 8 hours there's a good chance I'll wake up before it goes off - it's just not predictable.

Man,

I really hate alarm clocks. My norm is to set more than one to ensure they awaken me.

I am a shift worker and worked the evening shift, 3p-11p, for nineteen years. Plus, I worked seven days on followed by seven days off. 'Twas a sweet schedule.

About four or five months ago, my boss changed my scheduled work hours to 6:30am to 7:30pm, three days a week. It has been, and continues to be, a very rough adjustment for my body.

Have a good day,
TheWino

I think I MAY have set an alarm a couple of times in the last 5 years since I retired. Otherwise I don't need one. I now get between 8 and 9 hours of sleep per night. I wake up and get up when I've felt I've gotten my "quota" for the night. If I need to get up earlier, I go to bed earlier. Or, my wife will get me up if she gets up before I do.
When I was working, I was usually waking up shortly before the alarm went off, anyway.

Did I mention that I've always HATED alarm clocks? I think they were an invention by some sadistic person.

I hate alarm clocks! Used a clock radio so I would wake to some pleasant sounding music. Before I used a clock radio the sound of the alarm set me off for the day... and not in a good way. Now that I'm retired, I wake up whenever I want to. I earned that right!

Alarm Clock, whats that?

I have yet to go a single day without waking up.
So why would I need an alarm clock?

It has been 50 years since I had to punch a clock in the AM. And if it puched back I just punched harder.
