Fuzzy Head and fatigue

Post by tlewis303 » Mon Aug 25, 2014 8:13 am

Been on cpap for a year now. Anyone experienced this fuzzy head (brain fog) and fatigue from sleep issues?

tlewis

i have the same "feeling" been to pcp...sleep doc..and a neuro.. all said to take anti inflamintory drugs etc....
i tried...to no avail....the feeling stayed and no improvement what so ever

i turned up my air presdure by 2 ....seemed to help but still havin slight fogginess...

my thought is that the carbon dioxide thatvis exhaled is not compketely being removed from mask...just a thought.

what i can say is that all these doctors just recite what the OLD text books say..past knowledge

I've been to doctor after doctor. Have had this for over 4yrs now but only on cpap for a year. I noticed in the first 2 months that the fog lessened some after starting cpap.
I've had 2 MRIs all normal. About a month ago I started on zoloft and 2 weeks into it the fog got worse and still is today with added pressure like a low grade headache. During that time I went out of town a for got my cpap. So I slept for 4 days without it. Not sure if that caused the increase in fog or the meds. I stopped the meds and nothing as changed.
I have appt with sleep dr soon and they may raise pressure. I'm only at 6 cause I have mild OSA.

Do you feel a little better if you take a nap? After you wake up is your head a little less fuzzy?

tlewis, have you been checked for other causes of "brain fog" besides cpap? I have fibromyalgia, which causes that and fatigue and brain fog isn't fixed with cpap. Fibromyalgia is systemic; you might want to see a rheumatologist to rule that out if you haven't already. Other things can cause it too, but sounds like you've been checked for other things.

My fatigue has lessened a bit in the 6 months I've been a hosehead, but the brain fog, which is intermittent, has not.

My PCP has asked me if I have any joint pain and such associated with Fibro but I don't have any for the most part.
So I don't think I have Fibro.

I'm wondering about diet and gluten that could cause it.

How are your numbers?

You need to take your machine with you when you travel.....

What's happening with regard to what was discussed and recommended in your previous thread titled: "Can a pressure increase help with quality of sleep?" a few days ago?

Did you try a different pressure setting?

Are you using software to see your nightly data?

Did he test all the trigger points for diagnosis? When my rheumatologist pressed on the many trigger points, I discovered I had pain that I didn't know I had in enough areas to diagnose as fibro... Certainly I'm suggesting that you do have it, but my PCP was unable to diagnose it and that's why I bring it up.

The causes of fatigue are many and not necessarily related to sleep.
See this list from the Mayo Clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.org/symptoms/fati ... m-20050894 which includes:
Lifestyle factors
Feelings of fatigue often have an obvious cause, such as:
•Alcohol use or abuse
•Caffeine use
•Excessive physical activity
•Inactivity
•Lack of sleep
•Medications, such as antihistamines, cough medicines and cold remedies
•Unhealthy eating habits

Psychological conditions
Fatigue is a common symptom of mental health problems, such as:
•Anxiety
•Depression
•Grief
•Stress

Medical conditions
Unrelenting exhaustion may be a sign of a medical condition or underlying illness, such as:
•Acute liver failure
•Anemia
•Cancer
•Chronic fatigue syndrome
•Chronic kidney disease
•COPD — Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
•Emphysema
•Heart disease
•Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
•Hypothyroidism (a thyroid disorder)
•Medications, such as prescription pain medications, heart medications, blood pressure medications and some antidepressants
•Obesity
•Restless legs syndrome
•Sleep apnea
•Type 1 diabetes
•Type 2 diabetes

The pressure needed to treat apnea successfully is not necessarily related to its severity.

And I'm thinking that low pressure isn't enough to clear out the CO2 and consequently that's contributing to the "Fuzzy Head and fatigue"

Maybe

Maybe, from his previous post, viewtopic.php?f=1&t=100077&p=931794#p931794 , it looks like he's running in the auto mode (4-8) and the machine is holding him around 6? He said he increased the pressure to 8, but I wonder if that was just the max pressure. As you often suggest, maybe it's time for him to switch to straight CPAP? His nightly charts would be helpful.
