Philips Respironics DS460S vs ResMed S9 Elite CPAP

Post by Stevoreno_55 » Fri Apr 04, 2014 10:45 pm

Which is a better machine to consider if I need to replace a 6 year old Philips Respironics DS400S CPAP machine? A CSR at CPAP.com told me the Philips Respironics DS460S was a good machine to consider or the Resmed S9 Elite CPAP machine. Both can be configured to come with a heated humidifier and also a heated hose. I had a few questions I wanted to ask Philips Respironics about their DS460S but when I finally got through their automated phone maze system I was told by a CSR at Philips Respironics who was rather rude that they didn't discuss anything about any of their products with patients or consumers; they only dealt with medical providers. The same was told to me by a CSR at ResMed although the ResMed rep was much nicer; had better phone skills. The rep at ResMed told me to contact a DME.

Oh no.... Respironics vs Resmed is like asking Ford vs Chevy or Honda vs Toyota. They are both good machines and the differences are mostly a matter of preference.

While I agree that it's somewhat of a Ford/Chevy thing, what I'd really recommend is that you should be looking at either the DS560TS or the S9 AutoSet.

Clarifying this for the OP:

The PR DS560TS and the S9 AutoSet are both auto cpaps that can be set in either CPAP mode or Auto mode. If you are paying 100% out of pocket, the Autos usually run $50-$100 more than the full data CPAPs do. If insurance is involved, the APAPs are billed under the same code as the CPAPs.

The advantage of an Auto PAP is more flexibility. If the data show something is not quite right when running in CPAP mode, a quick change of settings allows you to do a week or more of auto titration to see if you need more (or less) pressure than your CPAP setting. (The DS460TS has a limited ability to do this, but it can't be run in an auto mode full time for more than 30 days.) If you prefer auto mode (and a lot of people do), you can run in Auto mode all the time with a real APAP. But if you prefer straight CPAP (and a lot of people do), the APAPs can be run in straight CPAP mode as well.

My new DME'S RT is pushing for me to consider an "Autoset" which might require me to have a new sleep study to qualify for; I really don't know but to get another machine set for straight CPAP I probably wouldn't have to go through a new 2 night sleep study. The RT brought me a CPAP loaner this week; a ResMed S9 Elite straight CPAP with a heated humidifier but no heated hose; just a standard ResMed S9 slimline hose; it's a nice machine but it's so much quieter than my 6 year old Philips Respironics DS400S machine; I like the noise generated from my old machine because my ears ring at night; during the day; all the time and the higher noise level of my DS400S kind of blocks that ringing in my ears out. This loaner which I'm using is less than a year old but it is so quiet; are the ResMed S9 Elite machines that quiet for anyone who uses one? Would a Philips Respironics DS460S generate more noise and be more like my old DS400S?

I'm hoping my insurance will pay for it but if I have to purchase a machine myself I'll probably settle for either a ResMed S9 Elite straight CPAP with HH and heated hose or a Philips Respironics DS460S straight CPAP with HH and heated hose. I've purchased nasal masks from CPAP.com before but never anything as expensive as a brand new CPAP machine. If patients end up buying a new CPAP machine themselves would they buy it through their DME who I assume would still be there to service it if it needed servicing or would most patients purchase a new machine instead from somebody like CPAP.com? I've already attempted to speak to someone at Philips Respironics about my DS400S machine; they quickly told me they DID NOT deal directly with patients.

If it's been over 6 years since you've had a sleep test it might be time for a new one anyway.

As for the machines, any of the new machines are going to be quieter than the one you have now.

I use the ResMed S9 Elite, and it is really really quiet. I can't hear it unless I listen carefully.
If you prefer a machine that makes background noise, the Elite is not one of those.

I guess I need to consider the P.R. DS460S instead. One other thing I've noticed while I've been using the S9 Elite; the RT brought me a P.R. Wisp(?) nasal mask to try; the mask is much smaller than nasal types I've used in the past but when I turn the machine on and get hosed up to go to sleep; I hear this annoying whistling noise everytime I inhale and exhale; the whistling noise is louder than the machine's noise. I think I'll try a different nasal mask tonight and see if the whistling noises is still heard.
