NG tube and CPAP

Post by eeckel » Thu Nov 21, 2013 7:59 pm

Has anyone successfully used CPAP while having a nasal gastric tube. I use nasal pillows and the nostril with the NG tube leaked so badly that the CPAP was unusable. I am in a major hospital system facility and the staff appear to be so uncertain about CPAP that they ask patients to bring their own units. I don't mind because it is hard to get used to small changes in equipment. It does seem to me that the speech language pathologists and respiratoroy therapists should have worked out solutions to CPAP problems that are unique to hospital environments. One of them suggested trying a FFM with the NG tube,I was willing to try but they didn't have a FFM for me to try. So I went without CPAP. for several nights. When the NG tube was pulled and I got back to CPAP my sleep was better and I felt better in general. Just wondering if anyone else has had this type of experience?

Wow, that could be a problem. The only idea I can come up with is to thread the end of the ng tube through one of the oxygen ports on a FF mask, IF it would fit (not sure about that). That would be a royal PITA to thread and unthread it each night, and I'm not sure there isn't a permanent connector on the free end of the ng tube that would prevent you from doing that.

What kind of hospital doesn't have CPAP equipment on hand or at least the ability to get it quickly if needed???? Seems like they are unable to meet the MEDICAL needs of their patients. Suppose they observe apnea in a patient without their own machine and mask and have to treat it to keep the patient safe during the hospitalization.

Here is a mask designed for this application:

The Hans Rudolph company makes a special seal so that an NG tube can be route under a FFM without causing significant leaks.
Here is a link.

When I had my titration study done, I had an esophageal pressure tube inserted through my nose, which is basically a pediatric gastric tube that only goes down into the throat. They started me off with a nasal mask, but almost immediately swapped it out for a FFM. Once I had the correct size for the FFM mask, I didn't notice that much in the way of leakage around to the tube. But it was also very hard to ignore the feeling of that tube in the back of my throat, so there might have been some "minor" leakage.

Thanks for posting the links. They certainly appear to be solutions to the problem. This should not have been a problem for me. The health care system need
