Colin Sullivan Refuses CPAP?

Post by NightMonkey » Mon Jul 04, 2011 1:45 pm

I found this link on another sleep apnea forum.
It has been reported to this author that Dr Colin Sullivan, the Australian who invented CPAP actually utilizes an oral appliance to treat his own sleep apnea.

Anyone know?

The author of that press release (aka thinly disguised promotion of dental treatment for SDB advertorial) certainly doesn't...
Dr Shapira treats sleep apnea and snoring at his general dental practice wrote:It has been reported to this author that Dr Colin Sullivan, the Australian who invented CPAP actually utilizes an oral appliance to treat his own sleep apnea. I have heard this from numerous sources but I have not received confirmation of this fact from Dr Sullivan so it can only be considered a rumor at this time.
Cheers,

Bill

There was certainly no disguise being worn:
Dr Shapira treats sleep apnea and snoring at his general dental practice, Delany Dental Care Ltd in Gurnee, Illinois and at offices of Chicagoland Dental Sleep Medicine Associates in Skokie and Schaumburg.
So does the inventor of CPAP use a dental appliance to treat his sleep apnea?

You would need to ask him (I believe he may be the only person who really knows - we don't).

Just why should he use cpap if a dental appliance works for him?

I don't consider this thread OT at all.

1) I am a big encourager of friends and associates to get sleep studies and use CPAP. If there are false rumors on the internet that Colin Sullivan chose a dental appliance over CPAP I want to know about it. I would not want to be taken off guard by someone who needs to be using CPAP say to me, "I read that even the inventor of CPAP does not tolerate the machine."

2) On the other hand, if it is true, I would want to know that also. In addition I would want to know about his diagnosis and how he knows his appliance is effective.

3) Finally, if Shapiro is circulating false rumors, I would like to see him exposed and reprimanded on this forum.

Colin Sullivan can choose whatever treatment he wants. However, "Enquiring minds want to know".

He invented Cpap. Terrific. Does that mean however, that for the rest of his life (as a researcher into better and better ways of treating problems) he has to USE it himself? Who knows if he can 'tolerate' it or not? It doesn't matter! If he's now found a new way to deal with his situation, good for him - it doesn't mean Cpap is crap or anything else!

Further proof that Dr. Sullivan really designed a mind control device?

I'm missing something here. I can't tell from the information provided if Dr. Sullivan even has Sleep Apnea? And if he does, if a Dental Appliance works just fine, why bother with a Blower??

Personally I doubt very much whether the inventor of the Artificial Heart for instance ,developed it for himself, my guess it was his passion or his job, perhaps both, the same is possible with Dr. Sullivan. IMO whether or not the nominal inventor of a medical device uses it personally is immaterial.

He didn't invent CPAP, he did invent the first Home PAP device.

It was a RUMOUR (regional spelling),
published and probably invented by a promoter of dental devices.
Nuff said!

What's the distinction? I'm not being snippy, I'd just like to know.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.
