5 New Ways to Prevent Diabetes

Post by avi123 » Fri Nov 16, 2012 11:46 pm

"The first strategy for a longer night's sleep is to get the TV, computer and smartphone out of the bedroom," says Rebecca Piccolo, a biostatistician at New England Research Institutes in Watertown, Mass. If you're already diabetic, new research suggests that getting treated for sleep apnea could help control your blood glucose levels. After meals, people with severe sleep apnea had blood glucose levels almost twice as high as did those without the condition".

Here lie the remains of Elmer Frick.
Placed in the ground by a simple brick.
It was not thrown to hit his head.
But sold to sit next to his bed.

Ah! Is this connected with the fact that having something to eat, especially if after a long period without, will put me to sleep? A diabetic thing as opposed to "just" a blood sugar thing? Blood glucose twice as high? Interesting.

Hmmm.

I've never posted my husband's graphs (don't know how to ) and I've received all the help I need from many knowledgeable people. Of course, It would be helpful at times but not necessary and certainly not pages and pages of personal graphs that have nothing to do with the topic or questions being asked. If any of the "pros" need to see data before making any recommendations, there are other ways to do that for the non-savvy computer folks.

I fail to see the correlation between sleep issues creating havoc with my BG levels and your illustration of posting more pages than I cared to look at of your sleep therapy results. All that did was put my BG levels up due to stress

Btw - although the results from my sleep study showed a need for CPAP therapy, in two years I haven't seen any significant reduction in my BG numbers - although my numbers are mostly non-diabetic as is my A1C so maybe there was no room for improvement with CPAP.

Yes, eating something - especially high, fast-acting carbs - can make you feel very sleepy. Many diabetics 'graze', as this keeps BG levels on a more even level than sitting down to 3-squares each day or leaving several hours between food.

Cheers,
xena

A sixth - switching to a vegan diet can "cure" - no need for insulin - type 2 diabetes in 43% of those who try it.

http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-500368_162-1837927.html

Eating a low-fat vegan diet may be better at managing type 2 diabetes than traditional diets, according to a new study.

Researchers found 43 percent of people with type 2 diabetes who followed a low-fat vegan diet for 22 weeks reduced their need to take medications to manage their disease compared with 26 percent of those who followed the diet recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

In addition, participants who followed the vegan diet experienced greater reductions in cholesterol levels and weight loss than those on the other diet.

"The diet appears remarkably effective, and all the side effects are good ones -- especially weight loss and lower cholesterol," says researcher Neal D. Barnard, MD, adjunct associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University, in a news release. "I hope this study will rekindle interest in using diet changes first, rather than prescription drugs."

The results showed that both diets improved diabetes management and reduced unhealthy cholesterol levels, but some improvements were greater with the low-fat vegan diet.

For example:

43 percent of those on the vegan diet reduced their need to take drugs to manage their diabetes compared with 26 percent of the ADA diet group.

Weight loss averaged more than 14 pounds in the vegan diet group vs. less than 7 pounds in the other group.

LDL "bad" cholesterol dropped by an average of 21 percent in the vegan group compared with 11 percent in the ADA diet group who did not change their cholesterol drug use.

Measures of blood sugar control also improved more significantly among those who followed the low-fat vegan diet than among those who followed the ADA diet and who did not change their diabetes drug use.

Researchers say the vegan diet represents a major change from current diabetes diets because there are no limits on calories, carbohydrates, and portions, which may make it easier for some people to follow.
