Data reader or cable for Resmed VPAP ST (S8 series)

Post by feeling_better » Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:44 pm

I had asked about this earlier. Never succeeded at that time many months ago. I wish to give this a new try.

My machine is the Resmed VPAP ST (S8 series), very expensive machine which came out around middle of 2010. Resmed, nor my DME is willing/able to help with the software and the reader for PC data monitoring. I finally with great difficulty managed to get a copy of the original Resmed Rescan sw 3.16.18 through my doc.

The data for this machine is smart card, with length about the same as a credit card but less than half crdit card width (blue and white in color. Unfortunately the card reader I have does not work with the sw I got from Resmed (3.16.18). The card reader I bought independently online (not the blue labelled resmed product), but I thought it was the same type when I bought it. It is ACR 38 [ACR 38U-SPC-R] from Advanced Card Sysem. The software does not seem to recognize the card reader.

I wonder if there is a special driver for this card reader that would make it work witht the resmed sw ? Anybody here has any experience with the above card reader I have making it work with the Rescan sw. Even if your machine is a different one, it may still be very similar to other Resmed machines (of the S8 series) which uses the narrow smart card. I can plug the data card into the back of the machine, and it does automatically downloads the machine data into the card.

Alternately, my last option might be to get the special cable which plugs into the same area as the card (but a female connector at the end of the cable) and the other end possibly a usb connector. I do not know how to find this cable or the name or part number of this... It is less convenient than using the data card, but I am prepared to try it.

If anybody who has first hand experience with the card reader and any s8 can help me here, I would appreciate it very much. Since I cannot monitor the data now, I am still using my old Respironics M1 machine most of the time.

The ResScan card reader is an ACR 38 with a plastic adapter added (P/N ACR38U-D1). Compatibility with the ResScan software depends on the firmware version. Apparently the firmware was updated after ResMed discontinued this card reader. Thus, some ACR 38 units are compatible with ResScan and some are not. The ResScan card reader is available on eBay.

If you want to use the cable, you will need the S8 USB adapter (the driver is included with ResScan) or the S8 serial adapter (connects to a COM port using a null modem cable, which does not need a driver). I anticipate that it will be impossible to find either of these.

RandyJ, Thank you.

This is interesting. Why is that practically every one of these sales of this item on ebay is from Israel? Has anybody has any luck with this one?

It took me about two weeks to get mine, from another seller in Israel.

I bought one from a seller in Israel with no issues. Paid with PayPal and received it in a week to 10 days.

I just received mine from the seller in Israel today and it is just as advertised.
I found out that my machine needs the USB or serial adapter that will plug directly into my machine. My machine will not accept a data card.....soooo
I am willing to part with this unit i received today, brand new in a resMed box for 50 bucks shipped to the lower 48 if you are interested.

Otherwise, I will list it on E Bay

You may still be able to use a data card. The ResMed "data card module" is just a plain piece of plastic on the back of the machine with a slot for the data card. It does not contain any electronics. The actual data card reader of the S8 is on the main circuit board. My S8 is able to download to the data card with the cover removed. I just stuck the card in until the contacts on the data card touched the contacts on the main circuit board. These are not the contacts on the edge of the circuit board. There is another set of contacts further back inside the machine that stick up. I'm not sure if you want to do this since you would need to take the cover off every time you download it.
