Sleepyhead and CMS-50EW Oximetry - .SpO2 files

Post by JohnO » Sat Jul 07, 2012 10:19 am

I'm not able to read any oximetry data into Sleepyhead, and was wondering if others had seen the same issue, and might have some suggestions.

I'm using a CMS-50E pulse oximeter. It turns out this is the wireless version, but I would hope the file format has not changed.

One other difference from others here, is I have no CPAP data, so I'm just trying to import the oximetry data alone.

I've tried this both within a Windows 7 virtual machine (where the CMS-50E) software is installed, as well as on my Mac, with the contents of the SpO2 Data Directory copied over to the Mac.

On Windows, when I navigate to the directory where the data files are located, I see nothing.
On the Mac, when I navigate to the directory where the files are located, I see file names that are grayed out, indicating they are the wrong type for the program.

Any suggestions?

If I recall correctly... In Windows, Initially only the Contec program has right to the files, or they are hidden.
Go to the SPO2/DATA folder properties and check the permissions.

ETA: Are you able to see the data in the Contec reviewer?
SH doesn't care if you have cpap data.

Excellent idea. I just checked, and the data files are not hidden, and permissions show as world readable.
ETA: Are you able to see the data in the Contec reviewer?
Yes, I am. Thankfully, it works quite well, so this is not a critical need.
SH doesn't care if you have cpap data.
Thanks for clearing that up as a potential.

Now here is what I -have- just discovered. If you look at my screen shot above, the extension is SpO2. The program selector is looking for .spo or .spoR! I renamed one of the SpO2 files to be .spoR (and also tried .spo) and then the application could open the file, both from Windows and Mac! Unfortunately, the data appeared not to be readable. On the Mac-side with the debugging window it showed the following three messages in the log window:

12548: opening "/Volumes/OshExtra/OshDownloads/CMS-50E Files/Data/user_1_1_20120707095044.spoR"
32506: gXAxis::Plot() Couldn't fit ticks.. Too short? -1000 4294978033000 4294978034000
32508: gXAxis::Plot() Couldn't fit ticks.. Too short? -1000 4294978033000 4294978034000

So -- maybe the file format -has- changed with this version of the CMS-50EW!

Thanks for the pointers down this path.

I said SH doesn't care, but that may not be correct. I have to import mine (50F) from the .spor file, and if I have cpap data, I have to reset the date and time in the import window. If I don't, it just pops up with it's own time.
I think the 50D+ will import direct thru usb. I don't have one.
I don't know about your device. Does it record wirelessly while you are sleeping, or when you upload in the morning?
You might search the forum. I think I have read one other thread about a wireless oximeter, but didn't follow it.

I use mine like a regular CMS-50E, recording on the unit overnight, then uploading via the USB cable in the morning. I'm ignoring the Bluetooth wireless support, as the few times I tried it, it was more hassle than it was worth.

I'm mainly curious now about the fact that my files are named with a .SpO2 extension, and not the .spoR extension. I wonder what that implies...

I googled contec .spo2 file ext, and found this. Check out this post and Mark's response. I didn't follw the thread any further. There may be more info, or you could send Mark a PM.

What version of Sleepyhead are you using? The latest I believe is V0.9.2/1. Some of the older versions had bugs that prevented oxyimeter data from being read.

Your Google-Fu is stronger than mine! I Googled for .spo2 and didn't find anything useful. I'll either add a note to that other thread, or more likely, drop a note in the Sleepyhead Developer maillist and see what happens. Thanks!

I'm using SleepyHead v0.9.2-2 on my Macintosh, and v0.9.2-1 on Windows 7.

I'm starting to believe it is something to do with the .SpO2 files created by version 2.2 of the Contec SpO2 Assistant.

I logged a bug and uploaded a sample .SpO2 file in the SleepyHead Bug Tracker.

That's good. Mark has put a lot of energy into getting the oximetry data to work, but everytime Contec comes along with an updated version.
I think if you update your thread subject line to include the "W" and ".spo2", you might catch the attention of someone else with that device.

edit: Because my keyboard sucks!

Done. The funny thing is, I ordered a "regular" CMS-50E. The box doesn't indicate anything other than a CMS-50E. The unit itself is designated "CMS50E." Only after firing it up and using it, did I realize it was the Bluetooth version, with it's slightly, but annoyingly poorly documented differences.

I'm moving this over here on the chance that John has learned something new.
sunzzofman wrote:sorry to bother you all but iv googled for ages about this problem and seen loads of post on this forum but nouts worked and my oximeter seems different. when i turn it on the version is 1.3. if i go into the settings they are

brightness

record
wireless

all the others iv seen seems to have a option like usb/upload yet mine doesnt :S and the model version on the back of the oximeter says CMS50E . any ideas? im useing win 7 64 bit, also i hear the "ding" sound when i put the usb cable in yet no programs detect it,it came with sp02 assistant version 2.2 .
You want this thread. Same problem. It's because it's wireless. You may want to try to return it if you didn't order the wireless model.
