Can't sleep without Cpap now!

Post by Paula J » Mon Jan 02, 2012 10:54 am

A few nights ago, our electricity went off for about 2 hours. I got up for awhile, but was sleepy, so went back to bed and tried to go to sleep without my cpap. I found that I couldn't breathe good enough to go back to sleep. That is scary! Has anyone else had this happen to them. I have been on cpap for 6 months with a pressure of 18.

When I first went on the hose I had one of those light bulb moments... and thought
to myself this is what I have been missing... air!

Now I cannot sleep without my equipment.

I always laugh when my DME asks if I've been compliant. I know they need to know in case an insurance company asks.

How do I know if I've been compliant or not? Well, I just answer a few simple questions:
  • Do I awaken with a MISERABLE headache?
  • Do I stay in a lousy mood the rest of the day?
  • Does my mouth feel as if the Fifth Legion took a stroll through it?
  • Does my uvula (the tissue that hangs down in the back of the throat) feel as if the current heavy weight boxing champion had used it for boxing practice?
I might not be "addicted" to my xPAP therapy, but I sure am happier using it than not using it!! Let's just say I have a vested interest in being "compliant".

I'm a new user, but I can REALLY tell a difference when I wake up in the morning!! CPAP has made me feel 100% better. I don't feel like my brain is "asleep" anymore. I now know what it's like to feel rested in the morning.

We had a power outage a couple of months ago.
(Thank goodness, they've been rare)
I had to sleep without my mask for one night; had a rotten night, and a headachy, nasty day.
Then I spoke to a neighbor who had to sleep without her oxygen concentrator.
Kinda puts things in perspective.

I wouldn't even think about sleeping one night without my cpap! In fact, I was getting the jitters thinking about what to do if my current machine crapped out... so... I have a resmed S8 as backup while my autoset is in for repairs.

This thread reminds me... to sleep with the S8 one night to make sure it is in good working order...

Since there is no cure but dieing, that's the way it's supposed to be. Life is much better on the machine, it's a small price in inconvence to pay. /jim

Haven't had that happen yet, but that is one of my greatest fears is my cpap going on the fritz or the power going out. I think I'd be worried about going to sleep without it too. If we have a major outage, I'll probably get a hotel room (assuming they have power).
Thinking of quitting CPAP?

No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:

Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

I slept one night without my cpap because of a stuffy nose. I could tell I was not sleeping good or that I was barely sleeping. now I am not sure if it was due to the cold or not sleeping with my cpap but I sure do not want to have to sleep with out it again.

Actually, "dieting" is not really a cure, there are people of all shapes and sizes, including thin, that are CPAPers.

Not a big problem, just get a backup battery system. I had my machine for a few days when our power went out for 15 hours one day , then next night went out for 10 hours........wouldn't put up with that. Just marched myself to the store and bought a battery....power has not been out since Best $170 I ever spent, bought a 12 volt deep cycle battery and an inverter, since the power has not gone out at home, I use it in my motorhome .
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

I believe he said dieing, not dieting. At first, my eyes filled in dieting, too.
