OT:What's your favorite board for low carb living?

Post by DocWeezy » Tue Jun 21, 2011 4:16 pm

I know that many of you have been doing low carb living for quite a while. I'm wondering what your favorite discussion board is? Is there any low carb group similar to this one (i.e., free flow of information, great people, etc. etc. etc.)?

After reading two of Taubes' books and watching Lustig's lectures on sugar, I'm a convert. Of course, it is one thing to philosophically convert; it's another thing to learn how to live without carbs--and I'm a real carb addict, particularly with breads. I'm hoping to find a good discussion board to help me stay on track. Thanks!

The jury is still out for me. I'm bouncing between the Atkins Official forum, the Atkins Diet Forum, and Low Carb Friends.

I'm NOT on Atkins, but those people stay on induction so long with very few carbs, so they have lots of good ideas and support. However, they also seem to me to be the biggest users of "fake foods"--artificial sweeteners (there are debates about whether or not stevia and xylitol are "artificial" but they are to ME), crazy bread substitutes, etc. I'm trying to do this mostly using real, whole foods, avoiding all those sweeteners. And if your approach allows some carbs they jump all over you--"did you know that the lettuce in the salad you ate has X carbs!" I lost 10 lbs in the first 8 days eating small portions of whole grain breads along with my fats and protiens!

I've found some good low carb podcasts, too, so I'm learning a lot. But you have to know how to winnow some of the crazies, too. I stopped one podcast after just a few minutes because the guest started off by telling all about how this vaccination he had a 18 months caused him to have autism and 300 heart attacks before the age of 12 (I am NOT exaggerating--he said 300!!!!), and that vaccination caused him to have kidney failure and some other dire disease. I have no patience with that sort of stuff. Give me evidence-based science, puhleeze!

I'm with you about the fake stuff, especially the sweeteners. Having a real sweet tooth, I'm working at training my taste buds to like other things and so far its working. I do use a tiny bit of stevia now and then when I make Thai iced tea with unsweetened coconut cream (yum!), but even then I don't make it very sweet.

One thing I'm learning about the carb thing is that everyone is very different. My hubby can eat a lot of fruit/veggie carbs with no problems; I can't--at least right now. I'm hoping it will change over time as my system normalizes away from the sugars and white flours. I definitely have metabolic syndrome and so I know that I've got problems with metabolizing any sugars.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out.

Mark's Daily Apple and Free the Animal. Also Robb Wolfe is good.

Being diabetic, I spend my low-carb discussion time on the ADA forums - also dlife.com.

If you have an interest in the effects of artificial sweeteners, click http://www.drjamescarlson.com/content.aspx?idx=55 for a fascinating insight. The medical doctor who wrote this book (10 chapters are free online to read) was an undergraduate in biochemistry and cellular physiology and his research is worth reading, although his strengths are not in grammar or editing.

Cheers,
xena

Agreed. These are both excellent forums. BTW, I'm newly diagnosed T2 diabetic.

So I guess you didn't make it to the part where he talked about how he was out in the desert waiting to die and coyotes brought him a freshly killed rabbit, and how he's healed something like 1500 terminal cancer "patients" by counseling them on diet. It gets even weirder.

Will Rogers said, "It don't take all kinds, but we got 'em."

Oh really? I'm not surprised given that after 2 or 3 minutes he'd already proven the fact that he was a crackpot. Now I'll have to go listen just for fun. Unfortunately, there went the credibility of his host as well, for having this guy on.

http://www.livinlowcarbdiscussion.com/index.php This forum is owned by Jimmy Moore who also does 2-45 minute interviews weekly with a wide variety of people who are connected in one way or another with the low carb community. Jimmy also puts together a groups of people who participate in a low carb cruise. I believe that Dr. James Carlson and Dr. William Davis have both been on these cruises. Jimmy Moore has more low carb connections that just about anyone I can thing of. The forum is wide ranging including lots of debating over different issues.

gasparama, thanks for that info - what a hoot a cruise with Dr. Carlson would be!

Be sure and spend some time exploring all his interviews and blogs which are on a separate site.

Personally I don't want to post a link to that because there are some people (not anyone here I hope) who lack critical thinking skills (and good judgment) and swallow whatever it was this guy had to say.

This guy was literally dripping in hooey and I would not trust a word he has to say.

I was really offended that the host would give a forum to anybody that full of cheese.
