One Year On

Post by TheDreamer » Tue Dec 29, 2009 10:27 am

Guess what I did last year on this day?

Has been an interesting year, with some changes, lots of learning, some fun....though not all the issues are gone. In fact, sadly, I still have the main symptoms that prompted to push my doctor to find me answers....the two symptoms that eventually lead to the sleep study, etc. EDS and the unexpectedly falling asleep during the day.

Some of the changes have been good, like not having to get up to go every 2-3 hours (or some nights where it seems I'm just going and going....) Other changes I'm not so sure about....I can no longer fall asleep at the drop of a hat, or sleep through anything. I live on the same street as the hospital...so things with sirens go by a lot. And, the guy above seems to jump out of bed every couple of hours...loudly.

Also I keep spending money I don't have on all sorts of stuff....some of which I never thought I'd ever get....even stuff related to CPAP.... like pillows and other masks....and supplies....

The water distiller was one of those first purchases....I'm still probably a couple years away from breakeven...but it certainly has been nice having versus the challenge of walking the 1.5 miles back from the grocery store with a jug now and then....its up hill coming back from the grocery store too. Plus its been a few weeks since I've been....

Actually, it was only the one symptom that lead me to push hard to get an answer instead of the brush off.....the unexpectedly falling asleep during the day....for as long as I remember, I've always had the tired all the time and falling asleep under certain situations....like in a cars and airplanes. And, some years ago...I'd let myself fall asleep during the day at work....I learned how to stay sitting at my computer, etc. And, I always felt way better a <5 minute snooze. But, it became a problem when those little naps were happening out of my control....and despite all the effort I was putting into not falling asleep....

Well, still tired at times during the day, and still nod off (sometimes inappropriately or unexpected)....so I guess its something to bring up when I have my one year follow up appointment. Which I should probably get to making.....

Meanwhile something strange happened last night. I filled the water distiller like I normally do...and ran it over night. I expected to at least see a gallon of distilled water in the morning...sometimes it does a little more and overflows a bit. What I found was only an inch of water in the jug. First thought was it cut out early for some reason, but the water distiller was empty.

Guess that explains why it wasn't so dry in my condo this morning....the hydrometer was reading 5% last night....this morning it was reading 15%. Filled it up and left it running this morning....let's see how that goes.

Dreamer, congrats!
I am coming up on a year on the board too. I was lurking around for a while at least a few months before I joined, but I wish I had found this place back when I was originally put on cpap and failed. Let's see if my memory serves me correctly that was about 6 years ago. I calculated that without having to take off my shoes.

Congratulations on completing your 1st year. Let us know how your follow-up appointment goes, and I'm wondering if there is any new treatment suggested for your daytime sleepiness.

Way to go Dreamer!!!

I hope you find some of those elusive answers you are wanting when you talk to the doctor (but don't count on it).

Dreamer,
Congratulations on your accomplishment. I hope your one year visit goes well. Hopefully you are feeling much better today than you did over a year ago.

I think your distiller may have been leaking steam. It happened to me one time. The lid was removed by accident. Also, be careful about overnight distillation. Make sure the water container does not get moved. I did that one night and woke up with distilled water all over my counter.

I've done that a few times.....what a mess. Was the first thing I check this time. I suppose maybe I didn't put the lid on completely....I hadn't slept well the night before and was kind of in a fog last night... and running the distiller wasn't a planned thing. But, I had resorted to digging out an ultrasonic humidifier to deal with the dryness...so its been using up my distilled water supply.

Guess we'll see how it did from running while I was at work...

I've only run it once while I was home....and I don't really like listening to it. But, I had forgotten to run it at night or while I was at work too many times...until I had run out....

So, I had my followup on Wednesday....and he told me that based on my compliance report I was on the nice list....

discussed a few other things, got more blood tests...and I'm now scheduled for a 'sleep deprived EEG for narcolepsy' on the 27th.....except that in chat last night with some people with narcolepsy the test that I seem to be getting isn't like the test they've had. Other people I've spoken too had never heard of the test before either. Though it was a item that could be ordered on the sheet the nurse filled out when getting me scheduled.

Only instructions were like go to sleep at normal time, but only sleep half as much, and then show up with clean hair (no product, which I don't use anything anyways) about 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time (8am). Though I suspect they also don't want me to drink a ton of coffee to pass the time....or like I normally do in the morning.

Not sure if I want to pass or fail this test....does passing mean I have it?
